Ah yes but a slight change of plans since I sat next to a very nice and convincing Belgian at dinner in Dusseldorf. will be leaving Turkey in May and popping in to Montenegro for a week )

There are not many belgians that sat next to you in dusseldorf, must be me than, looking forward to this summer, i'll try to improve my english by then. :)

slipping in to Carloforte on the way to SoF by kind invitation of Deleted User to see some sort of festival (probably more wine again).
Blimey, I must have a word with that Deleted User chap.
He's not even been there yet, and he invites other forumites, as if he were the local harbour master...! :D :p :D

He must have told you of the San Pietro event on June 29th.
That's in fact the local saint patron, which gives the name to the island (Carloforte being instead the name of the one and only village).
Glad to hear that you'll also be there.

I'm just beginning to fear that my old tub might look a bit out of place, with all those shiny and much bigger vessels around - yours + F630 + P67... :o
But be warned re. the wine: down there, anything with a gradation below 14° is considered stuff for the babies...

What with your brother and his little project (looking forward to seeing that) you must surely win the family award for grand patrons of the industry :)
You must have in mind only the bimini cut 'n shut that jfm mentioned.
Because aside from the fact that (knowing what sort of mechanism that bimini has), I wouldn't dare calling it a trivial adaptation, he also completely repowered the vessel, no less!
Whenever in the future I should need such sort of "little" project, I would probably consider smashing the whole thing to bits and use the timber to feed the fireplace... :)

Regarding the HT, I think it looks fantastic and will improve the usability of the already excellent flybridge.

I'll also throw in my 0,02€ regarding the colour scheme. All very much IMHO, but I would leave everything white below the flybridge as anything else would look too obvious, if such a vague expression is allowed. By this I mean the OEM look and feel suffers.

I like the black domes and antennas and also Henry's suggestion to leave out the dummy antenna to give a certain feeling of purposefulness.

As you said earlier, it's not an easy call and various combinations of black/silver/white would work well on the upper part. Here is a quick and rough (apologies for clumsy gimping) version with white shark fins.

In any case, the result will be superb.

Geez, I must have lost the plot somewhere. Is also Petem bringing his boat down there?

Huh - that''ll be the day (less of the )!

I was going to say that Deleted User has been begging me for years to join him on board his but that would be a lie! The truth is that he has taken pity on a boatless forumite and very kindly invited my wife and I on board for the trip. Talking of which, Deleted User tells me you know all the best restaurants restaurants on the south coast so I'll be expecting some top notch cuisine. The pressure's on!

Sorry about the thread drift JFM. Hard top looks well pukka, looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

Sorry about the thread drift JFM.
Definitely +1. I guess we should rather start a "Sardinian boating" thread soon...
...or should it be "Sardinian boating & enogastronomy"?
Regardless, it'll be a pleasure to catch up at sea, for a change vs. a PC keyboard! :)

Having had the advantage and indeed the pleasure of meeting henry, who is the archetypal, understated, home counties english gentleman, I would venture to suggest that the more vivid the diminutive deployed in his speech the more likely he might be to be describing something felt to be of significance.

So, the local nuclear plant going into meltdown might be "slightly inconvenient" whilst cutting the deck off, replacing the engines and rebuilding upwards from there is, naturally, a little project. :D

Actually, at the London boatshow henry was seen to be deploying an even more suave skill: promising faithfully and in front of witnesses that he had had enough of looking at boats and would be departing immediately with Mrs henry he was nevertheless to be seen genially propping up the bar in a nearby licensed establishment amid a crowd of liggers and ne'er do wells a couple of hours later.

Sorry, Mapism! You see what happens when you bugger off to the other side of the world? I get up to all sorts of mischief!

Yup and Mapism has promised to show us all those secret Sardinian anchorages that he keeps banging on about for which he occasionally puts those tantalising photos on the forum. You know the sort of thing - soft white sandy beaches, palm trees, beach bars and local lovelies. I'm really looking forward to it;)
Apologies for fred drift

In general, no-one need apologise to me about thread drift. I'm at least as big a sinner as the rest of you :D. Actually I like thread drift on threads like this that are just a chat really- it brings out some interesting tales, and we are treated to post #69 by a master of our language #69 :D

Scubaman, thanks. I have dozens of photoshopped pictures with every combination of white/black/grey on each of the main components (mast, domes, HT, sharkfins, Cortina panel). I like your above very much but I decided to have the sharkfins silver because it is easier to have them wrapped now by Grapefruit Grpahics and unwrapped later by me, than the other way around. Unwrapping them is the easiest thing in the world. So I'm going to cogitate, see how I like the job when it's done, and maybe unwrap the shark fins. As I say, a first world problem!

I'm a bit of a symmetry geek so I need the 4th aerial. It's not "dummy", its a spare! I can connect something to it anytime I want and could (but probably wont get around to it) thread a cellphone antenna inside it.

BTW I am hoping for improved VHF performance generally. The whips have been lifted 2.5m, are on a flat surface, and I have run all new high grade tinned coax cable from the VHF +AIS grey boxes at lower helm to the HT, separate cables for VHF and AIS

Not at all. Diesel is 90p a litre so we are heading for our cheapest seasonal fuel bill in longer than I can remember. And thanks to Super Mario printing a trillion and a half euros all our shopping and labour costs are 15% cheaper than last year

I expect S is talking to peters and may already

So a bit more for Diesel, overnight mooring fees on par with a suite at the Mandarin Oriental but not as easy to come by. €25 for a couple of beers lots more zeros for something to eat and €14 for a dob of ice cream afterwards.

Like I say, I'm genetically wrong for the SOF. The beautiful people of Nikki beach are welcome to fight for their tables :)

I know my place in life.

There is a trip boat doing the rounds in October that appeals though.

Monte Carlo - Santa Margherita Ligure - Livorno - Calvi - Xlendi (Gozo) - Valletta - Syracuse (Italy) - Agios nikolaos, Symi, Mykonos (greece) - Kusadasi, Cesme (Turkey) & Piraeus

Not sure what the weather would be like then ?

Henry :)

All makes perfect sense, of course. It will look fantastic in any combination.

On the topic of VHF; i remember you mentioning some time ago that on a couple of occasions you had a suspected breakage in the link between the fly handset and the main unit below. I hope you don't mind me asking, but has this re-occured since? I'm asking as I have the same Garmin set.

I don't post regularly but follow a lot of the threads on the forum - I follow Fairline Menorca on Twitter and Instagram and spotted the camping covers on a sq78 they look after...

early or late October?
I'd give it a 80% weather being fine, and 95% good for swimming in the sea around Agios Nikolaos, Symi and Kusadasi. I usually go swimming till late October and that's up north in Volos!
Curious, you disembark in Piraeus, or you go all the way back to MC?

cheers

I'm well aware of that, QE2 and the sister ship to Costa Concordia is a regular visitor to Volos, the fact that you can swim in the sea is a clear indicator that it's reasonably warm something like the best part of the UK summer :p
