I should know the answer to this but I don't. I don't think these are Gewiss sockets but does anyone know what they are?

If it is the socket you are looking for (and not the face plate), I have some extra from when I bought my boat and swapped the eu-sockets in. Those look identical to mine. Can send you if you need them.

Hi Scubaman, thanks, it's the face plates that I'm after. If anyone has a link to the Gewiss Playbus catalogue I'd be most grateful.

To put it in context, my plan is to retain the existing position for the TV (next to these sockets) but I would like to create a 12v socket (so that the TV can be removed and stored when not in use) instead of hard wiring it into the 12v circuit.

Whilst I'm writing I've some other questions.

1) The Glomex TV aerial works surprisingly well in the UK. I assume it is zero use in Spain? Irrespective, I'm inclined to leave it as it is rather than pull it all out and put a coax socket for it next to the 12v socket (like this https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/j-MAAOSwgmJXxXUO/s-l300.jpg).

2) The existing TV is wired into an inverter. I've not found it yet but would guess that I could locate it by removing one of the panels in the aft cabin. The inverter makes quite a noise (fan) hence my reluctance to use it for the TV. The marginal benefit of a 240v Samsung TV over a 12v Cello still doesn't make me want to use the inverter.

3) As the inverter is there, I could install a 240v socket next to the new sockets for the TV. It would only be of any use for low wattage stuff (chargers, etc). I am worried that someone will plug a kettle or hair dryer into it. Is this a genuine concern? What happens if an inverter is overloaded?

Thanks, as ever!

You need smart TVs as only movies from your own network or netflix will work unless you want to watch Spanish tv

When you say Smart TV's do you actually mean Smart TV's or TV's with Amazon, ROKU, etc boxes? At least if make an inverter driven 240v socket I can plug a Smart TV in later or use it to power a ROKU or similar now.

Problem for me was finding a Smart TV to fit the space... had to be 19 inch or less, LED for weight and consumption, etc.

I'm now going with a seperate box to run the "smart" stuff... you will change that more often than a proper, right-sized TV...

Yes, those sockets are Gewiss and they did not have one with a 12v lighter plug. At the time, they had a smaller version of shaver plug which we used for 12v.

Thanks all. I can't find them on the Internet so looks like they are obsolete in which case I'll have to find something else that won't clash too much.

The sockets will be mounted next to non matching Eber and A/C controls so not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Real smart tv. They are cheap so there is no need to mess about with 2 remotes additional boxes etc I always use Samsung as I think they have the best interface

Thanks J, I know this is an often asked question but the situation does seem to be constantly changing.

How are you getting the data to watch TV; Wifi or 4G? And what are you using to spoof IP addresses?

On the off chance that any of you are remotely interested, I sent Hedley and Ellis a photo of the socket to see if they recognized it. Shortly afterwards they replied to say that it's a "Gewiss System Compact" surround in 'titanium' (smoked chrome) finish. These were custom sockets made especially for Fairline 15+ years ago (off the shelf they were white then H & E plated / painted them).

Better still they still have stock and can supply 1, 2, 3, or 4 gang plates. Even more amazingly they are only £3 each and the plugs / coax / switches are available too (Playbus ones aren't compatible). The chap was extremely helpful and said that he gets an order from a Fairline owner every year or so (probably sign-posted from my web site).

So I've ordered enough for my immediate purposes (plus some spares :)).

Happy days!

Great information Pete, thanks. I will need to order a couple myself.

No problem, they're not the world's most attractive sockets but I like things to match :). Let me know when you're ready to order and I'll let you have the chap's name and part numbers.

Yes, I'm the same, I won't be able to live with a dull or pitted faceplate if I know they're available even if they function just fine the way they are.

I know I have one that is looking a bit ropey, will need to double check quantity but I'll likely get 3 or 4 so I have a spare.

Sorry I missed this but have relied by email.

For he benefit of all ...

I used a mifi with a SIM card. ( Spain sur ). The tv connects on wifi and Netflix does not care where in the world you are (£6per month vs £70 for sky who won't let you watch abroad and is not hd ... not sure how they still have a business left )

So in short nothing other than a mif

We also have a media server with hundreds of movies on which is now not used so much as Netflix is brilliant.

Samsung also give you a euro news app.

If you load the tv in the uk you can load a Bbc news app but not when you are in Spain so do it before you go.

Thanks Jeremy. For the benefit of others, it would appear that you can use a Smart DNS to fool BBC into thinking you're in the UK (https://www.smartydns.com/support/how-to-set-up-smart-dns-on-samsung-smart-tv/). So I'm going to take the advice given by JFM, jrudge and others and get a 240v Samsung 22" Smart TV and wire it into a new (matching) 240V socket fed from the inverter. TV will sit on an Avtext lockable and removable bracket so that we can lock the TV into place for normal cruising and remove it for rufty tufty stuff (thanks Nick Burnham for the idea). If I chance up on the inverter I'll see if I can replace it with a quieter one. I'll add a new socket for the Glomex coax but this won't be used in Spain.
