Following on from my Best 46' Fly thread, I have put down subject to a sea trial and survey (in 10 days), a deposit on this boat:

http://www.boats.co.uk/boats-for-sale/fairline-phantom-50-1757

In with the deal is the use of the mooring in Sotogrande until next year. Any comments regarding the marina would be helpful too.

In your collective opinions is this a decent boat and what should I be looking out for on the trial/inspection trip.

Lucky you! Great boat, built very well and I think that one is at a great price too.

I had the 46' and loved it but found the flybridge very exposed in the colder UK weather. I never had any issues with mine apart from general wear and tear so I can't help but enjoy it all the same.

Looks mint, I'm very jealous! I'm not aware of any particular issues with that model so just the normal advice to check the paperwork, etc.

I think the cruising is a bit limited around Sotogrande and it's not the easiest place to get to unless you fly into Gib but I imagine that the Costa Del Sol would be interesting enough for this summer and winter until you decide where to keep it permanently.

Soto is a very busy port in the Summer. Restaurants and Bars always full but be patient and you can eat. The worlds premier polo tournament is held all summer...free entry and 10 mins walk from port. From Soto you can do Gib (Cheap fuel and duty free), Morocco or Ceuta, or head up coast towards Malaga. Not the most exciting coast but plenty of Marinas to explore. Fly to Gib or Malaga. You can get a taxi from both to Soto, Gib half the time.

Worth a Summer down here....I am in Queensway Quay in Gib, plus often in Duquesa Port.

Fairline 50 a perfect boat....if you want to explore make sure you have a Rib. You can anchor off all beaches outside Yellow boys and Rib in through the entry bouys to Beach. Best part of Coast is amazing Chiringuitos all the way to Malaga....a lot are amazingly good and very reasonable.

Have Fun.

Quality, one off fairlines best. Just something to check- make sure the washing machine will do a spin cycle. The shocks corrode and they can play up if not used often. Fingers crossed it all goes well

Isn’t that always the way? The perfect 46ft boat is actually 50ft

I really like the Phantom 50 - one of Fairline’s best. Enjoy
Boats.co.uk are excellent to deal with as well so I’m sure you’ll have no dramas

LOL...you are right about both points

Thanks...funny enough, the washing machine has never been used...apparently the boat with 380 hours has had VERY light use....which I am learning is always not such a good thing. I will certainly check what you said.

A great boat , maybe a little shy on power with the 675 s ,

Pay particular attention to the flybridge overhang , it was a weak and bad design , the internal structure was weak and on some models gave way , look around the flybridge moulding and patio door areas for cracks and previous repairs .

A great Looking and well built boat , I’ve worked on the 40 43 46 and 50 all of the same era and ownned a 43 , it a shame they didn’t try for a full mid cabin in that hull.

just been admiring the pics again. Its very shiny, it could take years to mature to a nice shark skin finish like mine :-)
I'm working on the golf ball principal - it's more aerodynamic,
(OK I give in, if nothing goes bang over the summer I will have it professionally cut back and a few coats of decent polish.)
Having bought a very low hours and older boat I was expecting trouble, and there were the usual things. However I have been using lots of fuel set as I suspected a bit of water in the port tank (poor seal on fuel filler cap). At first I was getting some soot on the transom which I put down to old diesel /gunge/diesel bug/lack of use etc. Now though, with a double dose of fuel set at each fill, no soot at all, very smooth running, very clean exhaust gases.
I obviously can't prove it's the fuel set, but as this is boat number 6, I strongly suspect it is.

Sea trial and survey being done tomorrow...will keep you updated.

The boat has Gibraltar on it's name on the transom...does this create any kind of issue I should be looking for. It is being sold as VAT paid.

Maybe and yes.

Gib is not in the eu vat area. Depending on how long it has been there it may have lost any prior vat status.

If not lost then the transaction must take place in the eu for the vat status to be maintained. This is not an issue as Spain is but a marina away.

I'm a Princess fan and owner myself (so in the minority on here apart from HenryF and OldGit, lol ) but I must admit that is a very nice looking and well presented boat.

I spent about 6 years around a 2007 Phantom 48 which had the nice addition of a full mid cabin as the master suite. Bought with less than 50 hours at 3 years old and sold with about 600 hours last year. Only complaints during that time was that the Volvo engines did run a bit smokey and stained the hull. Had the Volvo specialist look at it several times and changed a few parts to help solve the issue but he felt it was only cosmetic and not a major engine issue. It was capable of about 38 knots flat out, although that's not why you buy this type of boat. Agree with the comments about the flybridge being exposed- you do get sprayed on the flybridge during F5 cruising. And from a bad experience heading round Lands End on the way to Jersey my father in law can confirm it can handle big seas- several waves washed over the flybridge on that occasion and it went straight through a couple more! The boat was based in Bangor, Northern Ireland so in the end the cold weather was the major factor in not enjoying it more and it is a little on the big side for exploring the West of Scotland.

Edit - only other comment I'd add is that the bow thrusters lacked power in any sort of a breeze. If the wind catches you the thrusters can be overcome so you can't just throw it into a berth and then catch any mistakes with them. Probably the same with most 50' flybridge boats to be fair but a Phantom 48 is my only experience.

Gib Registered is fine. It is a British Port. Make sure the sale goes through in Soto or you will lose VAT paid status. Gib registry easy to change to your name...similar to Part One. Good luck with Survey...

All went well on the survey...few niggly things including an ac fault, but price has been adjusted accordingly and looking to complete on Wednesday.
