Has any one owned or skippered on of these boats, if so I would like to hear from you. This is for an article in MBY on buying a used example so good and bad points, performance, sea keeping etc, would be greatly appreciated.

sure I have, but can,t remember details apart from they have the weight to handle some bad weather.

ps if you find one for me to helm I would tell you what I think /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif tongue firmly in cheek here.

good luck on your hunt. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I owned boat no 163, a MkII Fairline Phantom 46, purchased new from Peters at the end of 2005 – after they had terminated their relationship with Fairline. What a mistake – I should have purchased one from Essex Boat Yards as the service I received was not what I had been used to with the previous 3 Fairlines.

The boat was a nightmare, the worst problem was that the cheery woodwork “bloomed” – basically the lacquer turned white - this confused: required the boat to be torn apart twice and be redone. Also, the non-slip deck on the flybridge and side decks was badly marked from the mould and had to be covered in teak.

The boat was fitted with Volvo D9/500s and the starboard gearbox deposited its oil into bilge despite 5 attempts to fix it. Finally, the gearbox manufacturer was called in and they immediately knew what the problem was as they had been modifying newer boats at the factory – so much for communication. The problem was caused by the angle of the boat underway and the fact that the starboard gearbox is basically going in reverse and under more pressure – the fix was drilling a bigger hole in the breather.

As a boat, it had good accommodation, great at sea and when all the problems were finally sorted I was pleased with her. I had Volvo EVC displays fitted and these reported 120 litres/hour at cruising speeds.

Blimey, I see it didn't put you off Fairline but that lot must have tested your patience a bit /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Blimey.

Did you find out what caused the "Blooming" ? I had that on my last boat, although sold prior to sorting.
The dealer was not that interested in attending to it..............but always wondered the cause.

Whoops, bit of thread drift............

Blimey too! I've seen the blooming on older boats and thought it was caused by sun but maybe not. That must have been awful, and I hope you got Peters' good craftsmen because their not so good ones were, well, not so good

Argh,

I thought for a minute you were talking about a Sealine! Amazed this happened to a £600k Fairline!

Glad it all got sorted in the end. I believe that Princess had an issue with the laminates blooming and lifting on early V39's but they sorted them all out under warranty and I have never heard of any issues since?

Cheers for the warning

Blooming is caused by the dampness trapped behind the lacquer - basically a production issue. It was fixed by Fairline themselves and the original team who built the boat - I meet them and they were genuinely upset by the problems.

It was not a great time as the boat was unusable for months. However in the end it was perfect and I was happy that I was passing on a good boat. The Targa 52 and Phantom 50 have not had any of these problems.

Very interesting, thanks.

Was the blooming usually at the edges of an affected panel, or could it be right in the centre say ?

Apologies again for drifting !

Jeez, I am amazed that you had these issues however I am also pleased that Fairline after sales put it right.

Confirm that we have had no such issues on SV, actually we are so pleased with her that we would buy another one.

Sadly however, they are out of production. The options offered are P48 or SQ55 /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

There are 2 new shrinkwrapped Sq58s still available SV, if you hurry :-) They're in Essex, I've walked past them lots. PM for details :-)

Have/had the same problem on a T43 2005. Fairline/EBY warrantied to strip and fix. We didn't want the hassle, changing to a new T44 next week so hopefully will not be my problem anymore. I am confident Fairline will fix it. Spoke to Derek Carter at SIBS and LIBS about it and got the impression it was an isolated situation, having read the above I'm not so sure. Can confirm it was all over the cherry woodwork and getting worse.

Like you, much I prefer the layout of the 58 to the 55. Same performance for a lot less cash. I am really tempted.

Thing is, as I have grown my business I have been known as a risk taker and have proven to the doubters that the risks will pay off.

I just cannot get myself to risk committing to a new boat as the economy situation is very unstable over our side of the pond.

I can manage the remaining mortgage on SV quiet comfortably but I am not so sure the risks of taking on a new boat are worth it.

Jeez, I am beginning to sound like my accountant /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I will PM anyway just in case /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yes I see where you are coming from but it is good to note you are confident with the after sales.

We had issues with our second Sealine (C39) and they were impossible to deal with until they thought we would buy a new T50. We would have if we had had that confidence /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Derek Carter told me the same thing but he maybe didn't realise that people with boats do talk to each other. Hence the guy with the new Squadron 68 berthed 100 feet away mentioned that he had exactly the same problem!

/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif OK, I am bowing out of this argument now as I seem to be taking on the roll of Fairline PR and they are not helping /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Putting the build issues aside I think it a a fantastic looking boat, in fact the only boat I would consider robbing a bank for. The proportions look perfect.

There is one moored at the end of one of the pontoons in our marina and I lust after it every time I walk past.
