Fairline Fury MK1 restoration/refurb

Disaster.....but then nah

The boat has gone to Canvasman for canopy to be made. So while its away, dam i miss it haha sad i know but the boat yard ( garden ) is not the same with out it and looks empty.
Had to get a mate to tow it for me as i STILL have not got my licence back yet. Dont ask there as they have really done my head in now after a pone call the other day.

20220815-124750.jpg

Plan was while its away i will clean up and paint the drive, got my sand blaster and a greenhouse to get tat bit done. Just ave to see if the compressor keeps up, i tried it on a few parts and its ok but not long period. If it struggles to much ill just blast the smaller parts and use elbow grease to the drives.

Well as some mite remember i got a `good` engine from a chap who bough it for a few parts. Apparently is was rebuilt and running well. All happy as when i removed the head to check the innards etc i found new pistons in, well looked new.

I had a wee problem though as one valve lifter was sticky. i sorted that out but was concerned why it was sticking.

Today i thought ok, ill get a list of gaskets/ parts needed and get it all sorted next weekend

NOOOOOO pigin nora and all that. On closer inspection, and dont ask why i did see it sooner

What do you see ?????

20220820-094813.jpg

wire brush out and :eek::eek::rolleyes::rolleyes::cry::cry:

20220820-095513.jpg

I would of thought the core plugs would of gone but maybe a week spot in the block.

A little gutted but on further inspection i found the pistons are new

20220820-114703.jpg

20220820-134054.jpg

These are + 0.020 oversize. and as in good nick and one of the other better blocks i have the bores are .45mm smaller so i will get one skimmed and rebored. Would of homed it out but not risking it for sake of a few hundred quid and the worry when its spinning at over 4000rpm haha

20220820-134114.jpg

Also the crankshaft is good within tolerances and clean.

20220820-135903.jpg

So a stress to start but all ended well. But not going to give in. dam no.

Ill need to make a gear puller type tool to remove the cam drive gear to get the cam shaft out, i tried a gear puller but to big on the feet. Ill sort that easy enough though.

Hi Wayne…….I hope everything is going well.

When we were leaving Harbour a couple of days ago we saw this fine example of a Fairline Fury.
Sorry it’s not a better picture but we were taking the fenders in……and a ferry was coming in!?

Hi kida, things are not going to well, on the boat`y scene sorry to say. We are having thoughts for the future of Faffers Fury.

Sorry to hear that Wayne.?
I’ve always found your your posts very entertaining and inspirational.
Hope everything works out well.?

Best Wishes John.

As there was a few on here interested in this build i thought only right to tell you.

For some time now, well over a year i have lost motivation for this boat and life itself, just been trying to find motivation na dit just not working with one thing and another. I have had little time and patience for much stuff besides the Fury. So its time to give in before i get to far in the negative in finances with it.

I have put it up for sale so as soon as its gone we will be looking for an early Swift Kontiki motorhome ready to go with the funds, hope it doesnt take long, and not best time of year to sell this kind of stuff , Always loved them Kontiki`s, this way i can get away quicker and less stress ans start to enjoy stuff again and become my jolly self i used to be and stress free as i was.

I will get another smaller boat like a Bowrider or small sports cruiser maybe, found a couple just to far.

I have already found a couple i like and can tow behind the MH like a Bowrider and a Glastron Aventura V210, thats just to far though for to be cost effective. So not leaving boats just need a break for stuff.

sorry to let you down :(

Couple of tips from one who has the T shirt.
Don't buy a motorhome that has damp problems because it will be a hundred times more work than you ever dreamed. They are known as Kon Leaky in the trade not Kon tiki.
Very difficult to recover boat trailer from slipway as most motorhomes are front wheel drive (wheelspin)
Most sportsboat trailers will be above permissible towing allowance for motorhome.
Buy a couple of new paddle boards instead!

Do what you enjoy! No point slogging on. That said…you do take on some monster challenges ??

Good luck with the sale….someone will come along and then off camping!

I used to work with MH`s and caravans and restore them so i know they can be a minefield. And as for damp, brand new MH`s are no better lol. rather pay £10k for one thats damp than £50k. And they fall apart easier. Its no wonder they way they are made, i used to work for a MH manufacturer and was shocked at how there made, and what they cost. A Kontiki can tow 1500kg, therabouts and launch would be dome by the yard/marina. .

Think after so long messing with boats and health its taken its toll on me, oh and near 50 dont help being an owd git haha. The Fury is easy really, its just me that isnt haa

So go ahead with another project but I bet your other half would prefer to be out on the rd rather than looking af your latest project in the garden!
A 21 ft sp boat is going to be over weight

Could this be of new times ahead??????????

I have been on and off this boat a good few times since i had my `crisis`

Of recent though i have been urging to get back at it.. I started a month or so ago but hands have been bad and struggling to do stuff. I am sick of it ,sorry to say but shit getting in the way so about time i cracked on doing what i can.

Today i poppe3d out again to help amate with hos engines to get them running, sort of worked out, we did a coupe, mile cruise which urged me to do more to mine.

Last week i started to build this platform to get easier access to the boat for me. Should of done it ages ago and all other boats but like i do carry on struggling haha.

It just fits down the side at the minute as i have a pile of fire wood there i need to cut up for winter.

I remove the tarp i got for the boat last year, dam fine tarp aswell, well wort the money. i think about £180 with cord and clips. still i same condition. very stiff but good.

So tomorrow i will be removing the main bulkhead. You can see i taken te window out already a week or so ago.

20230407-163900.jpg

other weeks job

20230326-153847.jpg

so tomorrow first is the rear deck to come back out and seating to get the bulkhead out.

20230407-173022.jpg

i would be out now if i wasnt so shattered.

I had a late start today. Ok i had a lye in :)

Been a good day.

Once again i had to remove the rear seating deck. pain in the rear today, maybe me just not with it but gantry is a big help here.

20230408-112729.jpg

One bad design that is. not easy to get out the deck without it scraping on the side. very tight, still it comes out. The deck sides will be fettled once all back inplace along with the deck and gunnels. will be a good bit of Gel coat repairs to be done.

Happy to find all screws are stainless and came out easy for the deck supports and bulkhead lower beam. no need to get the lump hammer out.

battery lockers mite be reused, i did have plans but for now i will redesigned it all for LPG and battery lockers.

i was being cautious here, over cautious but then no harm in being so.

I have these props and incase the superstructure flexed once the bulkead was removed these will hold it all inplace.

20230408-115252.jpg

20230408-115237.jpg

Have to say, this locker has held water for the two years i have had this boat. just GRP bottom and all joints glued with god knows what.

20230408-115234.jpg

this small bulkhead will stay as it is good. only separates the fuel tank and engines.

20230408-121533.jpg

so rip out time, as said easy thank god and no GRP grinding to be done :) YET

20230408-122708.jpg

20230408-135317.jpg

20230408-135346.jpg

20230408-135349.jpg

The props were not needed for superstructure support, better safe than sorry a snot easy to square it all back up.
The rest of the inner bulkheads etc helped there.

20230408-135405.jpg

So three sheets of ply will be needed as some more CSM and resin as wat i have will be past its best now.
window will be refurbed also in the mean time. just glad to be cracking on.
Other engine will be sent off to be rebored and skimmed soon aswell.

so noting mega exciting to read about but feels a big step here :)

Looks just right for bi-fold doors in last photo!

All done today was a prep for new bulkhead to go in. and look at if i want to rearrange the battery storage.
But i think i am making more work for myself than needed. The starter batteries can be either side of the deck. but leisure batteries can go in the seat locker against the bulkhead.

20230408-135317.jpg

While here i have a question.

this is the switch between each starter battery

20230409-125459.jpg

20230409-125449.jpg

how it is wired up

20230409-130834.jpg

think i am having a blonde moment as i get my head around how this works.

Anybody please explain ?

So thats it, and thought i would get the itchy n scratchy out the way so no messing when i get the ply.

indeed, good to see you getting on it again, well done!

now, pic above, motors are going to be rather tight in there, aren't they? and very close one another, what's the space on the sides for?

Keep going. I lost interest over a long resto of a vintage BMW motorcycle, whilst not as big a project as yours, it really tested my mechanical skills. It took me 7 years to finish it, the advice given to me was to keep putting in the hours, always doing something as often as possible and eventually the end creeps into sight.
Thank you for being honest and posting progress🙂👍

Hi Vas :) ope your well.

The engines fit nice really, well towards other boats i have worked on. There is room to work eiter side ok. they are dam close to the bulkhead, the front were the water pump is as maybe 8mm clearance.

when they were originally fitted.

20201228_095712.jpg

The room either side is spare and a good amount so thats were i will be fitting a calorifier ( wen i get another as sold the one i bought ) and the diesel tank for the heater on port side. Starboard side will be for the LPG cylinders, two 6kg size.

these engines may put out good power ( 130hp each ) but small towards others.
