My brother has decided that he wants to buy one of these boats, despite me trying to persuade him that sailing boats are where it is at, he has decided that he wants a shaft driven version and a layout variant that sleeps around 6 people, not the version with the large shag palace in the forepeak.

Corniche's of the desired layout and engine configuration seem to be on offer for around £59k-£67k asking price, what, in the experience of you established motor boaters, will one of these actually sell for? I have a fairly detailed idea of how the sailboat market works, but power seems subtlely different, or is it that the power boat brokers are even more like used car salesmen? The brother is keen to buy his first boat, but does not want to waste loads of time with speculative offers.

I'd assume that we take 10% off the asking price as a start, but the brokers we have spoken to, obviously trying to talk up the size of the offer, suggest that this is not the case with popular models of power boats, such as the Failine Corniche. Sounds like rubbish to me but thought that I'd ask..

Whilst we got very close to selling the Corniche recently we have slowed the process down mainly as we just can't work out what to replace her with.......

The debate continues and as it took me six months to work out what dinghy to buy I don't expect this to a quick decision job.

Sailing is fantastic but just not us at present and the arrival of the new dog 'Skipper' provides a welcome distraction for us.

Sorry your post has been a bit hijacked here....

However to try to answer your question as a Corniche owner best I can - it does seem that good ones are in short supply and your brother is definately after the most popular layout together with the shafts.

Having spoken recently to someone who has been looking for one for ages it seems that the prices are pretty firm for these boats and a discount of 10% seems optimistic. As we have found out these boats do offer exceptional value for money and there do not seem to be many other shaftdrive boats available at this sort of price which again helps keep prices firm.

MBM did a very good buying second hand feature on the Corniche earlier this year which your brother may find helpful.

Do feel free to contact me if I can help and there are at least three or four other Corniche owners around on this forum.

Nice piccy of the pooch, can't help noticing that you have very manicured nails. I take it your not a bricklayer by trade. You'll soon break them sailing a raggy!

I've also been looking at the Fairline Corniche. It seems that good ones are in short supply (I haven't found one) as most now seem to have got to the age where they have become a bit of a DIY haven particularly in terms of repairs made to wiring, interior fittings and also the installation of additional equipment.

Several of the Corniche's i've looked at have had a substantial amount of water in the bilge which the pump won't extract - this has started to take its toll in terms of rusting fuel tank bottoms etc...

Having said all this - i don't see why you can't start off with an offer 10% below the asking price and negotiate up from there however good a boat is.

There's a Corniche on our marina for sale for around £48,000. Although it's on legs with petrols, it's a real beauty - especially inside. Owner, a wealthy farmer has poor health - hence sale. No use for serious cruising due to petrols perhaps??

I bought a Corniche this year.

My advice - Get a survey and haggle anything picked up. You can't set a % to aim for you need to be realistic.

You already know to watch out for tanks, both mine have been replaced. The broker also put new shafts and props on mine.

Shafts are better, especially resale value.

If it's cheap there is a reason, they hold there value.

The older TAMD41A engines smoke a lot, there doesn't seem to be anything you can do about that.

As Nick says, you get a lot of boat for your money when you compare them to others.

Like Nick, I would also be happy to talk to you or your brother.
