Fairline Corniche A good buy?

Thats it, BushBaby will be on the market tomorrow :-(

And now hlb throws a Princess into the equation!

Aargh! this is supposed to be fun :-) !!!

Many thanks to all for your input.

Cheers

as a princess 35 owner who has been approached by corniche owners nearly begging me to sell to them it would appear the P35 wins out (dinette version of course) have fun looking round :D:D

There is nothing, but nothing better than a P35, ok some newer things might go a bit faster on the flat. But nothing will handle the sea better, it is an established fact.

A P35 has so much room onboard, you have to get up to a more modern 40 or 50 foot boat to compete. 20 or 30 people for a party, is not a problem, they can all sit down.

"There is nothing, but nothing better than a P35,"

Agreed but.....
Problem is,there is a considerable price leap tween the Corniche which can be found down around the mid 30k if you don,t mind a bit of work and the P35 which will be up around mid £60k.

A friend of ours has a Corniche currently for sale and its a stunner. It really is in immaculate condition for its age, a real eye catcher. Unfortunately its a twin petrol on stern drives hence the price, but at £35k its a lot of boat for the money.

Had a quick look around this today at Burton Waters with my Dad as he is looking to get back onto the water! Definately a lot of boat for the cash but the petrol useage will be eye-watering even at moderate speeds. Its not ruled out though as the equivalent diesel on shafts will be 20K more. There are lots of bubbles on the hul so that might be another bargaining tool to get it cheaper again!! He's looking at the Birchwood TS31 as a contender as well and feels much bigger than the corniche

Having lived with a P35 with TAMD41's I would echo others comments, watch out for lazy gearboxes and old steel tanks, but a lovely boat, nice layout, (dinette version) handles well (on shafts)

I reckon you will get one for around 50k or less if you are lucky

not knocking the Corniche btw as I did consider one before the P35, just preferred the layout of the later

Sorry for the thread resurrection (and hijack)

Can anyone offer any advice on a Corniche with twin V8 Volvo penta's?

Particularly interested in fuel consumption - mostly at river speeds and reliability of both petrols and outdrives at this age?

I think I know most of the advice would be to spend more on a diesel but if a diesel was 15-20K more and the petrol didnt really leave the river network or go too far then is there a strong argument?

2 v8 lumps by now would be well on the way to scrap unless they have been really nursed over the years, do you have an oil friend who is a sheikh? you would need one!

Buy one with diesels in there getting really good value now, like the p35

Are they really that bad at 4kts - I was thinking about 3gph for both max at tickover.

I know you know your stuff from reading other posts so what is likely to start to go wrong with the V8 - is it the base engine or the marinised bits? The ones looking at have done about 1600 hours.

If its a direct cooled engine then corrosion is the killer to the block and ex manifolds.

Thankyou that makes sense - I guess its going to be hard to guage the state of corrosion from a basic survey!

If its been mostly sitting in fresh water then I assume it may be much better than salt but then again they have done a few hours and will inevitably have done some time on the salt.

2 x V8 petrol.......Don,t walk away .......RUN !

Thanks for your replies - it does make you wonder why they were built with v8s in the first place!

What would be a minimum price that would justify one over diesel? At some point they must become attractive for mainly river use?

Also does anyone run outdrives on one engine to save a bit of fuel?
