After 30+ years of sailing in the Solent and beyond, I am happy to report that our Mystery 30 will move to Dartmouth to a permanent mooring tomorrow. The only dark cloud is the absence of a cock pit cover which was ordered and half paid for at the Southampton Boat show last Sept. I never envisaged starting the new season with this level of disappointment in Kemp Sails. Happy season to you all....

Maybe you should call them? I'm told by our local sailmaker, Penrose in Falmouth, that the blue cloth used for sail covers and for UV protection strips is in very short supply and can not currently be obtained; there's none in the country.

In a similar vein, I took delivery of a new car yesterday. Some bits are simply missing, for instance wing-mirror motors can't be obtained just now, so my new car doesn't have them! Maybe in a year or two I can have them retro-fitted, maybe not: no choice.

In my own business I have a nice order from the US; great, except I now can't buy the electronic components which used to be in stock at Farnell or Mouser. They say Jan 2023 delivery. I managed to buy enough on the grey market in China to fulfil the order, but had to pay $47 each for parts which 2 years ago were less than $1 each, so we're making zero Gross Margin (and thus a loss). It's the curse of the age so maybe a little investigation is called for before bad-mouthing Kemp?

Edit: I'm sure you'll love Dartmouth! I was there on Sat and Sun: bedlam but fun (I was in rowing in the Head of the Dart - only 3x the length of the boat race course).

Thanks jdc....so looking forward to life on the water in Dartmouth.... big chasing sailmaker for months etc...but must move on now and look forward.... nil desperandum..

That’s a good point, I ordered a new sail cover (from a different sailmaker) and it should have been ready last month.
Totally forgot about it…
I’ll give then a call tomorrow.

I'm amazed

Is it not the responsibility of the contracted party to advise the customer of a delay. Whatever happened to customer service?

The delay seems legitimate, the sailmaker has time on his hands - he cannot complete the work he programmed - so what is he doing? Busking...? :)

Did it take 30 years to find a mooring in Dartmouth?. Seriously how did you select your Dartmouth location? It sounds like you are on a buoy somewhere ? Should one be joining a certain list if planning future retirement maybe ? Does having a local property help at all if looking for a berth?

Good luck if you do plan to set off for Dartmouth today, thick fog here in the Solent, slowly clearing. We were leaving Cowes this morning bound for our new home port in Roscoff but as it looks like fog all over the channel again tonight and tomorrow we've postponed till Saturday when good viz and a nice easterly breeze should arrive...

The fog halfway up the Dart is now clearing, I can now see across to the Dartmouth side.

We moved here three years ago and got a temporary harbour master's mooring within a few months of applying, in fact the boat moved before we did. However I don't think it's like that now, there is even a waiting list for winter lift out.

I have to report that the sprayhood component was installed today while the boat was on the hoist awaiting launch on the tide tonight....the rest of the cover promised sometime in May.... the sprayhood is a proper job.....
