There are quite a few good Facebook groups. We have one for anyone in South Devon: https://www.facebook.com/groups/291096391097813/ There's also a Fletcher group and a large RIBS, SIBS and Sportsboats group that has grown exponentially over the last 12M. This one's good as they do lost of group cruises all around the UK. Facebook groups are quite good if someone keeps on top of the the spam posts (notably sunglasses etc ;))

Thanks for the comments, I plan to keep on top of spam posts. I think Facebook groups are better for quick comments and photos, forums have their place but these days most people use Facebook on phones so can put up instant pictures or comments, where as forums are more when you get home on pc, laptop etc. On the Facebook page you can sell an item, just not commercially but if a chandlery has a half price deal it will be ok, It's also a good all in one so it doesn't matter if you have yacht, motorboat, pwc we all love water and being on it.

That's the use for the group. And fun.

300 members and the banter is growing, ive been asked by a couple of marinas to join and ive let them as they said it would be good to have special offers on during the summer, im going to write to them all to see if we can get something going, there will never be a fee involved so its a win win

I have joined this and to be honest it is better and simpler than the forum. for some things. In particular Facebook is simpler to use when it comes to things like posting pics, and it runs on a mobile app.

An idea .... there are groups of people in the same area who would like to meet up - but keeping track of who keeps there boat where other than a manual list is almost impossible.

How about a group for certain areas what people who keep boats there can join and chat with? I am thinking

1. Balearics
2. South of France
3. Solent

you don't want to many or it will loose the plot, but I think the above caters for many on the forum - just set up a group, and join ( which is a click). If you are planning on going just add dates and location to the timeline and everyone can see you are there and it is simple to meet up.

Well done Phil for setting up the new "Boating UK" Facebook group, it's amazing how quickly it's growing and there are some good conversations going on over on there. It will be interesting to see how it develops. I think it will be very successful.

I am the creator of the "Ribs Sibs and Small Powerboats" FB group (called RHIBs). I started that group in December 2014 and over the last 2 years it has grown to over 2700 members. The RHIBs group is predominantly Rib owners, but right from the start I wanted to not exclude hard boat and Sib owners, and we do have quite a number of hard hulled boat owners on there. We do have regular "cruises in company" where group members get together for a day out on the water.

Here are links to both groups in case anyone on here is interested

Some of us who should not be mentioned (in the UK but not in the Solent) already use FaceAche to check up on what is happening, and who is going where. However, this is a very useful addition. Thanks Phil :D

Thanks for the comments, the idea of separate groups is not necessarily a good one as it will just water down the current one, the problem is and im sure someone will do it but if you have too many groups where do you post? if you take a picture coming into Cowes do you post it on Boating UK or Solent, then someone starts a group called Cowes now you have 3 and some join all 3, some only in 1, so some could miss out, do you post your picture in all 3, so some members will get it 3 times, im on a couple of other groups for gun dogs and its a pain when you get the same notification 2 or 3 times, then someone asks a question and posts it to all groups and you end up having to hunt for replies. If we have a Solent group those on the West or wont join and there probably isn't enough people to make a group with a lot of people so they would lose out. Then someone would start a motorboat group and before you know where you are there are hundreds of groups and everyone misses something.

There is no money involved and never will be, someone could set up a group for the revenue so you would be targeted for adverts which will never happen in this group and you have freedom to sell and no silly restrictions like you have on here so there is only one interest and that is boating.

As far as SOF goes there could be one im not sure, there are those who want to send spam or put things on the page that are of no interest which has to be removed which im on top of, to do too many groups is not easy. im hoping the group stays as a single group its working well at the moment without having to go into different sections.

The practical challenge is knowing who is where in the summer so you can say hello.

I do hear what you say, I wonder of FB supports sub groups or something else that would allow people in there same geography to meet.

You can turn on location but this seems generally intrusive ( from what i can see)

Any other ideas ... i am simply looking for a solution to " who is here" that does not involve a forum post etc and the use of memory as to who might be about!

Already the Cala Dor thread has people making various comments on when they may or may not be there which is basically impossible to track !

Normally when people post its to show where they are, or they check in have you used this facility but you need to set the settings for the group, failing that most people when they post put a line on, even now if you look at the pages people have put moored up at x or enjoying a drink at x. thats probably going to be what most will do, as you go up the river in Cowes you will say just that. im sure it will work out good and instant for all users.
