Eyelets

I am thinking of changing the rope luff on my mainsail to one with slides. Are the brass eyelets available from chandlers etc suitable? They seem a cheap way of adding eyelets and a sailmaker quoted £40 for the same job.

I suspect that on all but the very smallest boat the brass eyelets that you can put on with a hammer and the bits that come with the diy ones will not be strong enough.
