I want to be able to carry more diesel, for more range and for filing up more at the cheapy placesbut am feeling a bit clueless abut the best way to achieve this. Currently the boat can carry about 5000 litres and it would be good with more.

The fuerthest i have got so far with this is nowhere. I have a transfer pump that jfm told me to buy for some reason ages ago, can't get the right fittings for it so it is new, http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=051010015&r=2165&g=122
and have found vetus and tek tanks sites somewhere that sell up to 90 litre tanks and also vetus sell up to 200o litres tanks.

Is it best to have big tanks made to fit low in the bilge, but will then need to connect somehow to the main tank... but which is currently full of diesel?

Or is it best to have low-tech big luggable non-fitted tanks.mega jerrycans and use a simple siphon, i so what's the biggest of those?

An extra 100 galls (400-500 litres) wd make a difference. Or 200 gals even better. Or erm 400 better than that. I can hide and stack things in a foredeck hatch if they can fit through a hole max 780 by 480 mm

With non-fitted (or fitted) tanks do the fillers have to be at deck level? Or cn they be indooors so to speak? Or could i lash down square-shaped tanks on the deck? any ideas ?

Shld be able to fit extra tanks and use transfer pump to shift into main tanks when needed. Fit offtake near to bottom of extra tank, then pump up to extra inlet on main tank. Extra remote filler reqd to added tanks.
Alternatively fit extra tanks above level of feed to main tank complete with their own vent and they will act as extra capacity (if semi-permanent). Would need fuel gauge recalibrating.
Oh B! , this is getting too techie.
talk to me tomorrow night

Tek Tanks will make to whatever size and shape you want. Mine was 155 litres and is a strange shape to fit in my hull. The lower you can get it, the better as it will have an impact on your stability. You will need a vent pipe, a filler pipe, and a suction pipe to the transfer pump, which should be connected into the filler pipe for the main pipe. Of Course if you were very clever and could get the correct sort of pump, you could use the suction pipe also as a filler pipe.

http://www.tek-tanks.com/ will also have all the fittings.

I've got an extra tank. Keep it in the boot. Or lazerwhotsit thingy for the none boaty. It's a 45 gallon oil drum painted regimental grenn. Well it's green because I mixed together all the hammerite paint in the garage and thats wot came out! Anyway you might need sumat bigger but the principal is the same. Thing was abot oil drum is, it already has BSP pipe fitting threads.

So after a few do's at trying to get home on one engine and discovering that there was not enough fuel in one tank. I took the drain plugs out and fitted taps and pipe to othe drain hole on other tank. Then a tee piece down to bilge. Very usefull when inadvertently filled fuel tank with water! But also auot transfer from one tank to tuther.

Now the new tank can be piped into this one. Even fit an inline fuel pump to swish it across and even up brew. But I dont bother with that. Just tap on bottom of drum then a wander hose with in line pump and fill down tank filler hole. It's saved loads of money. Cost nearly nowt to make and meens that I can spend longer in out the way places, before looking for refuel spots.

Alternative solutions...

You could slow down a little bit, and trade in your rocket for a wooden beauty like this.
At the same size, you'd get much better confort and more time to enjoy what boating is all about: cruising.
Not to mention that 5000 lt fuel would be worth of some 1500 miles... /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
