Exterior varnish

Sikkens Filter 7. Just finished the 9th season and only just wondering whether to take it back to the wood again. For minimal change to the colour of the base wood choose 'Pine' colour. 2 coats gives a flattish appearance, 3 and more starts to give a nice sheen. A very light roughen up and one coat each year keeps it pristine. Softish so not brilliant for abrasion resistance but fine in most situations.

I have used Epifanes and Le Tonkinois. The latter is more forgiving on application as it does not need keying between coats and so you can build it up quickly lightly sanding for the first couple and last coats. However, with Epifanes keying with Scotchbrite (other products are available) between coats when building up thickness results in a superb "professional" finish. Epifanes is similar to Le Tonkinois in that it is a Tung oil based varnish, however, it does claim to include some UV inhibitors or some such which may mean that it lasts longer.

Epifanes gave a terrific finish on my rails after, as you say, a gentle keying between coats
