Extending the range of your Torqeedo outboard with a portable Honda Generator

If I'd bought one of those instead of my last outboard, I'd now be needing a new battery, at roughly the cost of that outboard!

What Dan wants is a variation on the micro-generator project.
Small petrol engine, DC output around 500W.
Or you could just carry a 2hp Yamaha for longer trips.....

I am not brave enough to speak for others and I don't remember mentioning anyone by name but if you want to form a gang of 3 then I suggest you appoint AP as your leader because he is the most intelligent and articulate. Don't ask about the others. But then I think he has resigned in post 115.

This thread is about Torqueedos and their use, which naturally points to the future of electric propulsion as it is the new kid on the block. You (and others) stated your views earlier that you didn't think it was viable, fair enough; that's your view. But we've heard it, ages ago. There are many irrelevent posts here. We know it won't work now, we know the figures. At what point does repeating it over and over again become ....

You're right about me being weird though. Thanks for noticing.

But it's about the value not the cost. The question really is whether the advantages of an electric outboard outweigh the extra costs for your kind of usages, and of course whether it appeals as a gadget. So I love the Torqueedo but have no truck with chartplotters, radar or AIS - just personal preferences on how you spend your money and how you cope with (or relish) any disadvantages of your choices
 
Gosh, I would like to see a viable electric outboard? but the Torqueedo has, so far, not done it (for me..) I would love to use my little boat on the local river without the noise of my Yam 3.5 2T. (At sea I leave the O/B behind)
The idea of a a silent genset to increase the range appeals; I used to have a Mase 600 which knocked out 20 amps at 12 v. and was fairly quiet. But that is still only 240 watts, so around 1/3 hp. Not realy a big deal.
 
I just brought a 1003S

Hi All,

I just brought a Torquedo 1003S;

+ Clean
+ Storable in any orientation
+ Split-able into smaller bits

- Limited range
- Slow recharge time

We use our tender for;

- Going to our mooring; 0.5nm from the pontoon, possibly uptide
- From anchorages/bouys; Usually a short distance to shore - 0.1nm xtide

We do not tend to use our tender for long trips up rivers etc. Also we aim to keep our 30Hp V2030 as the Yacht engine, although if we replace our tanks with Batteries, it might be a viable.

Will let you know how it goes. Yes I know about battery discharge (and charge) rates, costs of new batteries. However I have had little luck with 2S outboard reliability. SIMBO will not use, fit, or trusts them.

This is my third season with the Torqeedo 1003S.
It has been brilliant. My only concern is the shear pin, which is a bit of stupid design since it's not going to be easy to remove the prop once the pin has broken. Discussion here http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...03S-Prop-removal&highlight=Torqeedo+shear+pin
I'm going to replace the pin with a piece of stainless bolt if I can. At least I'll be able to remove a damaged prop easier than a sheared pin. I carry a spare prop on the boat and a damaged one stands more chance of getting me back than a sheared pin.
Other than that, it's a brilliant motor, enjoy :)

I have a 2kW Torqeedo Cruise, lithium ion battery pack from Torqeedo with about 2.7kWh and a modified generator to match charging voltage up to 29V. The generator and Honda work fine as range extender. I run it with 300-400W. Modification for increased voltage (and same power) was free of charge.
Btw, CEO of this company Torcman is former CTO of Torqeedo.

I can post pictures of my setup, if there is interest.

If your going to use a honda gx35 to charge your Torqueedo why not use an outboard with a gx35 engine fitted. They are available

I have heard about outboards with GX35 fitted. However, money was not my primary concern, but silence during operation (battery only) and available power. The 2kW Torqeedo cruise is very quiet during operation, no comparison to GX35. I would just use that genset when no wall outlet is available and i need to recharge.
