I found the vid below quite interesting. There are now ‘super clone’ copies of expensive watches that are so close to the original as to be virtually impossible to tell apart. For £500 or so you get a watch that is virtually identical to the £10k real thing. Worth a look:

Mmm..not really.

They may look similar but then so does a 25 Euro number from the looky looky man. The £500 'superfake' would stand closer scrutiny if you were trying to fool someone, but why would anyone do that? Unless you're into watches most people wouldn't have a scoobie do what the person sitting next tothem is wearing nor would they care.

I would say a superfake provides the worst of all worlds. Ultimately it's just another copy but costs real money.

If you like watches then just buy the one you really want (whatever that is) You'll have it forever but the price will soon be forgotten

People wear fakes for fun or to impress.....but the danger of perfect fakes is that they might get passed off as the real thing....that £500 watch might cost you £10,000

But you can't get a real one for £500 - you'd just be getting something that looks like the real deal, which is fine if that's what floats your boat. Maybe avoid swimming with it though.

How much is a top of the line Musto Jacket these days? About 1K? Would you buy a fake one for £50 and do you think it work work as intended? Might be a bit leaky so you'd need to budget for an umbrella as well.

As it happens I do have a Musto jacket which is (shockingly) nearly 30 years old - I don't know what it cost back in 1998 but whatever it was it's been great value!

Well, I see what you’re saying, but if someone that knew a great deal about waterproof clothing said “this fake musto jacket is, to all intents and purposes, the same jacket as the £1k one” I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase the £50 one.

I’m not trying to encourage anyone to buy a fake Rolex, nor would I buy one myself, just thought it’s an impressive feat to produce such a thing.

Not that I would spend £500 on a watch let alone £10000, but the thing I took from that video is that to all intents and purposes the fake was every bit as good as the real one. So you are spending £9000 for the name and Mr Rolex is raking in the cash

Probably quite a bit of Rolex’s £9000 profit per watch is spent on legal fees tracking down forgeries

It's sad really as with the skill to build a near perfect Rolex and sell it for £500, that manufacturer could surely start their own watch brand. I'd pay £500 for a real high quality mechanical watch that wasn't a knock off of a more expensive brand.

There used to be those watch catalogues that got passed around the pub....where you were told that this is your chance to have a high end (non branded) watch for only fifty quid.....in reality, you got a watch that was worth...about £50 retail. It was quality and stylish. So it was the same idea...rather that copy, just create something new...with a little back story to think you were getting a bargain.
But brands are a huge part of our culture....companies spend billions to promote and protect their brands...and we can’t pretend we are not brand conscious, or above it all....because boat brands are very important to us

Walking around Singapore at night I was offered 'copy Rolex' about 50 times. I was not tempted but I did buy a copy Cartier for my wife. It looks pretty good to me.

Indeed. I suppose, to be fair to Rolex et al, what hasn’t been tested on these ‘super clones’ is their longevity. Those test results will be available in 50 years or so.

Seiko, casio and citizen all have their own luxury line of watches. Seiko have many watches only available in japan. They like to keep the best to themselves ?
If im going to mention grand seiko then i may as well link to their probably most expensive. It is waterproof !

Yep, happened to me...missed the vintage Omega, and got a rather "nice" (but totally useless to me - and probably most people today?) diamond signet ring and coordinated gold cigar case....this seen as "first prize" by the kind testator!

Super fakes are even fooling some experienced sellers, and only when the watch gets to Rolex is it found to be a fake. That is how good the super fakes are, but they probably cost £500+
I did consider changing one of my watches for a different model via a second hand watch seller. The reality of the super fakes in 2024 put me off. I know what I have but if the clones are now so good they are fooling people who sell these for a living, then I don't want to risk it.

There is a person at my golf course I have heard about, who rather oddly, buys the real watches, then buys the fake version and only wears the fake.

Pagani Design "homage" watches, (clones) on the other hand offer sapphire glass, good steel, automatic for less than £150. They seem to have a wide range in terms of quality though. So research is key. I bought one for golf because I did not want to jar the automatic movements in my other watches. Yeah, they can probably handle it, but if they dont....so, I paid less than £100 for a homage and it does it 6-12 hours of golf very well.
Cheaper on Aliexpress than Amazon if you have the patience.

I understand the idea of buying a masterpiece and keeping it in a safe while a copy is hung on the wall...even diamond jewelry. But fake name brands can get you into trouble (I could be wrong but) in some places like Italy you can be prosecuted for having fakes

My 3rd seconda cost about £25. Looks like a Rolex but who looks closely? They last at least 10+ years and I test them for waterproof ness in a diving chamber to 25m, which is as far down I ever want to go underwater. They tell the time enough to use them for Astro Nav. Easier to use than GPS.
