Why is it not advisable to fit an exhust temperature alert on an outdrive engine but can be used on shaftdrives.Is there a suitable device that can be fitted to Merc. or volvo egines using primary/secondary cooling. DAVE

The volvo V6 lump does have exhaust temp alarms on it. Is the engine temp gauge not good enough for you?

I think the answer might be that the spent raw cooling water is injected into the exhaust a long way downstream, and obv the temp sensor has to be located in that zone, and that's hard to do on an outdrive. That's a guess, I dont know your set up.

An arguably better way to get warning of no cooling raw water is vacuum alarm on the raw water intake, just upstream (on the suck side) of the raw water pump. This gives faster warning than exhaust overheat. Sealine fit this standard on the T51 instead of engine exhaust overheat alarms

Thanks for the advice. Ive found from many years of powerboating especial in the tidal thames when picking up plastic bags that guages do not react fast enough. On my flybridge i only have an audible alarm which seams to get progressivly louder. I have in the past blown head gaskets in large petrol lumps,so perhaps i should ask what is the chance of this happening to my 4.2 diesiels if a responce is not other than immediate.Thanks Dave.

Dunno if you can fit one to your lump, but moons ago when I was running outboards, you could fit a water pressure gauge. I found it quite useful. It moniters the pressure of the cooling water funnily enough. It shows up and blockage such as bags etc and gives a good indication of pump wear. Might be an avenue to explore.
