A recent thread about different types of anchor seen on a walk around a marina got me thinking about the different types of anchors that exist, and why some are special. Results below, but without notes on why they are special.

If any type is missing from the list, or you know why a specific type is special, please comment.

Admiralty pattern anchor
fisherman anchor
Danforth
Brittany
Spade
Bruce
claw
CQR
plough
Bugel (spelling correct, or should it be Bügel ??)
Delta
stock anchor (is it a specific type or a class of types, i.e. all that have a stock ?
stockless (same question, opposite sense)
mushroom
Rond anchor
grapnel anchor
Meon anchor
Manson Supreme (or is the Supreme bit not part of the name ???)

Added later:
Fortress
Rocna

Other types ????

Then there are the "anchors" by function or position, and others:
killick
kedge
bower
best bower
small bower
port/s'bd bower
sheet anchor
sea anchor
drogue
stream anchor

Others ????

Thanks in advance, and looking forward to reading and commenting your contributions.

If you're listing Bruce and claw separately, does this mean you want all the different makers of CQR-alikes? Mine are both "Harbourfast".

No, Pete, not interested in makers or look-alikes where they are not established types with a design behind them. A CQR-copy modified to avoid IP problems is not a new design, just a copy that is tweaked.

Fortress
Guardian
Northill
KobraI and KobraII
Bulwagga
XYZ
Skrew
Oceane
Trefoil
Brake
TopGard
Supermax
DorMor
Fob THP
FobLight
FobRock
Barnacle
Hydra Dyne
Seagrip

among others :)

Are these specific types, i.e. designs in their own right, or are they manufacturers/makers, tweaked copies of other designs, etc??? Which are which ???

I always thought that was just a kind of fisherman - is there more to it?

Pete

I have no experience of them but I remember talking to an American called Don Street (owner of 'Iolaire' and author of various sailing books and articles) at the boat show a few years ago and he said he preferred the Herreshof to any other anchor.

I think it is a kind of fisherman anchor but with bigger palms

Are you planning a massive setting/holding/bending test? :D

Noooo !!!!

But now you mention it, It would give me great pleasure to take part in such a test, properly independent, and set up to take as many factors into account as possible.

Not going to happen though, is it??? Manufacturers, and all that revolves around advertising revenues, would not allow it, probably. Just musing.
