I am planning to remove and clean the exhaust elbow on my Volvo D1-30B next weekend to hopefully resolve a power loss. When refitting, will I need tighten the bolts to a recommended torque?
I think you will find the fixings are studs so I would clean up the threads before attempting to remove the nuts also best buy a gasket first. I would not worry about the torque setting you will need to compress the gasket enough to make a gas tight seal and also to hold the part firmly to the heat exchanger and if you are not used to working with spanners perhaps get it checked by someone you can trust . You can get information on general torque settings for bolts according to the gauge and thread pitch if you refer to the Perkins Perama Pdf that was the engine similar your Volvo there is a useful section at the end but you may need some engineering knowledge to understand it.
I can't find a torque setting for this in the service manual but for the exhaust manifold it says 10Nm/7.4lbsf.ft.
For items not specifically listed it says M5 5Nm, M6 10Nm, M7 17Nm, M8 24Nm, M10 50Nm.
Incidentally I don't think this engine is Perama based, it's a later model, the 403D. No doubt the Perama figures in its ancestry though.
