Can the Exhaust Elbow on a Volvo D1-30B be removed without draining down the cooling system? Is it practical to remove the pipe at the top that connects to the water jacket and quickly bung in it to minimise leakage?

I don't know the D1 but are you sure that the pipe doesn't connect to the raw water side of the water jacket rather than the coolant side?

If it does, there is obviously no need to stick a bung in anything.
