Hi

Does anyone have any experience of the Exeter Ship Canal? I need to do some work on my boat and it would be hand to be close to Exeter. I understand that there are moorings along it, is this correct, if so does anyone know who runs them.

Thanks

It is still in use for pleasure craft, but no longer for commercial craft. Moorings and hard standing in Exeter Quays (at head of canal and close to Exeter city centre), also moorings just inside the entrance to the canal (by the Turf pub - note not accessible by car). Contact Exeter Harbourmaster for details.

There are also the Retreat boatyard and Trout's boatyard at Topsham, not on the canal, but on the river at Topsham, just outside Exeter. Both have some moorings and hard standing.

How long to get from Exeter Basin to Turf Lock?

How? By water or walking? Cars can only go part way, as mentioned above. And the car park is notorious for break ins, so not recommended.

By car from the quay about 20 mins and then a 10 minute walk. Walking, well over an hour.

Call Clive Redfern the landlord of The Turf Inn, that's the pub on the seaward end of the canal, he will be able to put you right.
P.s I seem to remember that a gate key used to be available to boat owner's to get to the pub's car, which is quite secure
