Exactly how long is ?

From tip of anchor to end of swim platform.

Our mooring master lookd at the boat , laughed and got his tape measure out., its 47 feet long.
On our pontoons boats are required to have 6 ft clearance both fore and aft between you and the next boat... thats a 53 ft mooring .
My present mooring is only 42ft.
Plan B............Chop of a pointless waste of space in the UK, the swim platform ?

I don't know why swim platforms cannot be made hinged. So you can raise them and lower them as needed. Ok so nowhere to put the tender, but not all peeps need or want one.

Swim platforms as a proportion of a boat length does seem to have grown over the years, either boat owners waistlines have expanded or folks are swimming more, which i doubt.
A cynic might suggest its a way to suggest in the sales brouchure that the boats length is bigger than its rivals ?
The little bonnet over the anchor will be counted but adds zero to the internal volume.

Swim platforms and cockpits on med designed boats are bigger as you spend more time on them. Where as UK designed boats have bigger saloons and galleys.
Re ST840 - good idea. Some sailing yachts (Hanse) have a fold down transom which turns into a bathing platform.

Our marina takes the waterline length when measuring up for berths. Never had that anywhere. One marina Portsmouth way I had to hike the mizzen boom up because it hung a foot over the transom and they wanted to charge me for the extra!

Our Birchwood TS 37 is 39, I Believe what they actually called the newer ones plus we have a RIB in davits. We are charged for 12 metres, fine by me. Hull graphics has a big 'TS37' decal on each quarter. one Solent harbour master said 'don't tell me, you are 37ft?' , natch said I

We had friends with a Bowman 42 not many were built unlike the more common '40' so they amended the graphics on the hull down to '40' AFAIK never challenged.

When we had a W33 I said 9.99 metres (top limit of a charge band) to a Concarneau HM who laughed and said' I suppose it grows in the sun and shrinks at night?. When we had a jeanneau Sun Legende 41 we met another whose owner had cut a chunk of the pulpit and re did the graphics to ' Sun Legende 40' saved him quite a few beer tokens apparently.

We moor between poles and pay for the area length x width.

What you then park in that area is of no concern to the marina (size wise). Some like more space than others - and pay accordingly. Others can´t get the space they need and cram a boat into a tight berth, but the marina don´t really care.

Guests pay per over-all length but since this is now a self service with only little control, I´m sure no one overpays .
And some don´t pay at all.

Our boat model is ´975´ but could be delivered without swim platform. Then in reality a 900, but the with 975 decals.
We commonly discuss this with harbour masters when we visit and like to ask these to prove the 975 when so claimed. All documents and the CE plaque in the cockpit states 900 so we win in the end.

Just like a BMW car called 530 despite the engine being a 1998 ccm ...

Then why don't they do it on Mobos.
I know a couple of manufacturers have sliding transoms which is a good idea. But can't help but think that a boat that gave its true length for marina measuring would do better in sales than one with a 3ft platform slapped on the back. If only so that mooring fees were a bit cheaper.
It would mean that folk (me mainly) could look at bigger boats without having to jump to the next size bracket.

Possibly cos the marinas eventually will add an extra charge ( lets say 10% ) for boats fitted with lifting swim platforms and you will be back to square one, with a lot of new income for people who repair the marine hydraulics on swim platforms .
