For the new 5.3 m rib I am possibly buying I want to put a 2 stroke on it. The boat is rated to 75 hp.

I have an old yam 70 that I might use but have found a couple of Evinrude Etec 75 hp that look a good price.

I know Evinrude have gone pop and not sure what spares etc are available.

I was wondering what any owners of Evinrude or indeed others think of these engines

thanks in advance

The downside is that if you ever sell it in the future it’s going to put buyers off big time.
Most people will be factoring in the cost of a repower which will make the 2024 hull effectively worthless.

However, if you don’t care about that… depends whether you are confident you can work on the engine yourself and get parts. It’s obviously got a lot of electronics on it so if anything goes wrong it’ll be a lot easier with a laptop.

Depends if you're reasonably handy. Evinrude are no more but there are still spares available, especially in the US. There's also a big, knowledgeable owners forum again US based.

I have had 2 x Evinrudes - a 75 & a 150 and they're great engines. Fewer moving parts than a 4 stroke - you can get the diagnostic software from the US if you wanted - winterising is so simple that you can do it if you were just leaving the motor for a few months. They're probably slightly marmite engines - you love 'em or you hate 'em:sneaky:

I never ever worry about resale value but even so at £12k for the complete set up including trailer and evinrude Etec 75 it would not loose too much

I had a 21ft open boat with a low hrs mariner 90 2t. 26knts.
Changed to a e-tec 90. Far less fuel usage and a big increase in acceleration. 33 knts !
Next was a yamaha 200 2t. That could eat 25 litres in 5 mins... soon sold it on.

We've got an etec90 on a 4.8m rib (really overpowered but fun). At the time of speccing it, it was only hundreds of pounds extra to go for the 90 over the 75 and they are the same block so a no brainer.

We had it for 8 years without fault, then got some fishing line up the shaft which let a little water into the gearbox oil. We weren't really using it, so ignored it for 4 years until this summer. Went down, charged the battery and it started first time (old fuel, absolutely zero maintenance in those 4 years). It then ran down to the local slipway (45 mins without fault) and we pulled it out so we can get the seals done in the gearbox.

So my experience with these engines has been pretty faultless.

As others have said, now they are no longer made, resale will be harder and finding spares but that will be factored into the price of any being advertised these days as its common knowledge.
