From the 1980s, but it ran again last week after a few years in the shed.
Can anyone recommend a U.K.-based supplier of spares please?

Many thanks. The first item on page 1 of 16 on Wills' website is the plastic cam follower that was designed to go brittle and break every few years. Not cheap, but if I buy one, I can remove my bodge.
And a whole range of spark plugs, but not quite the right one. I must read up on what I thought was a fairly simple component. How wrong I was! ?

I assume you mean this part

1649859210130.png if so avoid adjusting unless absolutely necessary if it's more than a few years old for the reason you have discovered.

The latest recommendation for spark plugs is
4 hp .. 1969 - 1976 .. J6C
4 hp ..1977 - 1987 .. QL86C or L86C
4hp .. 1988 ... QL77JC4
3, 4, & 4 Deluxe ..1989 - 2001.. QL86C
All Champion and gapped at 0.030"

The ones originally fitted /listed in the owners manual are very likely now obsolete types.
The gap has changed from 0.040" (for earlier models ) to 0.030" for all.
If you have to fit NGK equivalents it is best to avoid resistor plugs ( ie those with an "R" in the number) especially if your engine has cdi ignition.
Champion plugs with a "Q" in the number are inductively suppressed. Inductively suppressed NGK plugs have "Z" in the number but unless avoiding radio interference is important it is OK to use unsuppressed plugs

I would use
Champion QL86C or L86C
OR
NGK BZ7HS-10 or B7HS
for any 1980s 4hp model

( The -10 suffix to the NGK number indicates that they are supplied gapped at 1.0 mm. so ought to be re-gapped but you will never notice the difference )

I have a 1980’s Evinrude 4HP outboard, I bought a pair of the correct Champion spark plugs from eBay. Might be worth a look

Thanks all, especially VicS for the diagram of the offending part! The adjusting screw seems to me to be an unnecessary refinement and hastens failure. Thanks for advice on spark plugs and Evotek. ?

The adjusting screw is there so that you can adjust the throttle so that it just starts to open when the roller is in line with the mark on the cam.
