Eventful w/e for CG

The CG sure had their work cut out yesterday didn't they.

I was out for 4 hours and heard

1. Mobo hitting rock and sinking at Lullworth
2. Pan Pan for injured crew
3. Boat grounded at sandbanks
4. Mobo lost engine near Calshot
5. 3 Divers Overdue
5. Mayday when yacht found 3 divers floating in the sea

And the number of folks that have no idea what Seelonce means. Even when the normally placid voice of Mr CG was getting notably irate.

Heard the Mayday on Sunday with the yacht that found 3 divers (presumably/hopefully the 3 that were reported overdue ?) and took them in tow.

Also heard and monitored the recovery of the diver who suffered a heart attck and was airlifted off dive boat near Nabb Tower at c 12:00 saturday. Anyone know the condition of this poor guy/gal ?

Totally agree with comments about the appalling lack of r/t disciple during casulaty working. Anyone else hear "Queen Elizabeth 2, Seelonce Mayday" on saturday !

Yup busy weekend for Solent CG. Also heard about 8pm lastnight they were looking for missing jet ski, somewhere off St Cath.

I heard a Pan-Pan for a boat that went aground in the Emsworth channel. Presumably it can only be soft mud, so I did wonder what an earth the CG/RNLI should do??

Reminded me of another incident when a Mobo went aground on the soft mud in Haslar creek - they had obviously radioed a distress and lots of blazing blue lights arrived - two fire engines, an ambulance and two police cars. I spoke to a fireman and apparently the message that had got through to them was "someone is stuck in the mud". Since this was after the Morecombe Bay disaster, they took it really seriously.

Yes, it was hard not to detect the glee of the Solent CG operator when he had to tell the QE2 to shut up.

The missing incident from this post was one in the anchorage outside Newtown on Sunday. A single handed 20' mobo drifted onto a 35 yacht. Mobo skipper damaged a leg trying to fend off and was taken to an ambulance at Lymington by Calshot lifeboat.
The anchor chain of the mobo was wrapped round the yacht keel, a challenge which I believe was taken up by Clashot inshore lifeboat and others.

Yeah, I went to Cherbourg on Friday and back Sunday... and kept stum but lurked on 16...
Heard all above and just to update you the jet skier was found Ok.. I think they said that he was reunited with his family ??

We came back from Cherbourg via Needles Saturday and also enjoyed hearing QE2 being ticked off.

As we passed Castle point there was a further Pan Pan from a disabled yacht (engine dead, no sails up in a decent breeze). We responded to Solent CG and took them in tow into Cowes, with a commercial rib from a well known organisation in hot pursuit trying to take over the tow and warning me of the dire problems with moorings and ferries ahead! It was the skippers call on the disabled boat, and he was in two minds as the rib driver was badgering him and putting the fear of god up him. I expect he was after a juicy towing fee or even salvage. We landed the disabled HR352 alongside another boat in W Cowes and carried on to Portsmouth.

You should have raised your black ball over black diamond and black ball and told the commercial RIB to keep clear (where does one stow all this junk?). Anyway well done, hope the HR owner was grateful.

I was standing on the waterfront in Cowes, beer in hand, watching you tow in the HR with aforementioned yellow and black rib in hot pursuit.

There was also a yacht aground (on the falling tide) in the Chichester area, last I heard was a panicky voice saying that they were healing over and starting to take on water, help was about 2 minutes out.

What amazed me was the number of calls reporting the dead whale. Obviously hadnt had their radios on. CG very patient except for the occasional lapse into irony.
ps why cant they do anything about it 'til it lands on a beach? When last seen it was floating eastwards off Calshott on the edge of the main channel. Wouldnt like to run into an unlit mosyly submerged whale at night.......

Surprised that nobody used these experiences as a call for compulsory licensing. Of course it wouldn't have altered anything.

Surprised about the whale but you DID know that John Prescott is rumoured to be holidaying in Britain somewhere this yaar didn't you?

I'm quite sure he was grateful, but in these situations casualties are sometimes too pre-occupied to think about profuse thanks. Hope all ended well for them -they were a bit shook up.

Thanks - we thought about settling in to W Cowes after our channel crossing but it looked a little crowded as we dropped our tow so we carried on to Gunwharf and watched Shrek 2. Highly recommended!

I have to admire their irony - the "yes, we have been monitoring this for the last......thank you for your call" was up in the Cleese class on Sunday but the best was the French race boat that ended up on the shingles earlier in the week. Having called to the vessel for over 2 hours CG eventually took a call from race control and had a very interesting discussion!

col and I helped Portland search for a missing windsurfer in Poole Harbour (cancelled when he got home.....) but were still trying to work out just exactly what was expected for a 21ft Bayliner stuck on the Poole training bank on a falling tide - the muted idea of taking it in tow ?....but someone called in to the third appeal and we headed off the other way for a bbq............

If at sea all the CG can do is issue a warning either through a local navwarn or via the Hydrog (WZ). Once it lands on the beach as a member of the "Fishes Royal" it then becomes the responsibility of the Receiver of Wreck (MCA), she has the job of claiming Fishes Royal for the crown if they want it; any disposal is then down to her.

I know of a Senior CG who after consulting with ROW arranged for a smelly whale to be disposed of. He decided to get the thing blown up by the RN, instead of one smelly whale there were thousands of pieces of smelly whale spread all over the Ardnamurchan
