As needed for a Very pistol but will no longer valid from the end of December. What are people doing about this?

Dunno specifics, but the French are much more relaxed about firearms. Most of my neighbours are tooled up and keep them in racks by the door, including handguns. So I expect a cert for flare pistol would be routine.

As for more dangerous than a rocket flare...when was the last time anybody got hurt with a Very pistol? Not that long ago, there was a serious injury with a rocket flare.

In the US, plastic Very pistols are freely available, not to mention the insert that takes a .38 round

Pretty unlikely when there are next to none around.
Yes.
Bu,t quite a while back, a friend found one in a second hand shop. Restored it nicely, then thought he had better talk about a licence. The police tried to do him for an unlicenced firearm when he applied. A conviction would have seriously effected his professional status. He managed to talk his way out of it, but close.

I use a 12 bore pistol with a series of standard 12bore cartridges, and an exemption on my FAC.

Specialist cartridges for deer scaring etc from Primetake.

UK law does not require a FA certificate for a Very pistol or its ammunition whilst on board your ship. One is required to purchase though, not necessarily the ship's owner, or to transport it ashore.

How do you get around the barrel length?
I had an Irish bloke ask me to 'repurpouse' a double barrelled 12 bore pistol. I declined.
When clearing out the house of a client. I asked about the nice shotgun. He said 'Just take care of it' It was a pûmp action , the prefered one by the SAS. Nice wooden stock and forearm. But, also the short barrel and pistol grip bits in plastic. Instant 5 yrs in UK.. I deep sixed it.

My Dad told me that when his father came back from his service in the RAF he brought his Very gun back to Edinburgh. They lived in Colinton, which is a very genteel village suburb (and was even more so in 1945). My Dad, then aged 9, persuaded his Dad to fire a flare up over Colinton. The police were not hugely amused but his father got away with a mild reprimand and confiscation. Cool story bro etc.

I am one of them. I am surprised there are so few.
I got rid of mine quite a few years ago due to having to store it in a secure and locked locker on board when not on voyage, that the police said they would visit to see. A bit of a shame as the cartridges had no shelf life unlike the flares. Now I will hopefully rely upon led type flare, vhf radio and a PLB as flare disposal is a nightmare in my view.

I spent 4 years trying to get a licence for one in Saudi Arabia. We use them to ignite a blow out on a drilling rig when drilling sour gas wells (H2S). The licence came through as we were abandoning the last well. In China we used firework rockets to ignite the flare stack when drilling under balanced through a gas bearing zone. That was fun, it took about 100 rockets to actually hit the gas plume, with nearly the whole crew participating in the event. They all had fireworks.

Could be why the French have ten times as many gun related deaths as we do.
