European Commission Launches EGNOS Open Service

Galileo is for road pricing, so perhaps EGNOS is part of that. as to the increased accuracy, I have so far managed to find my marina berth without needing ordinary GPS.

As to cost, how would we know what any European project costs? The Commission's own auditors consistently refuse to sign off its accounts, and get persecuted for revealing confidential information when they try to explain in public their concerns

HOW DARE YOU SMIRK? Don't you know that EVERYTHING European is GOOD news?

Ah, good.

So the Latvian/Romanian/Serbian drivers of illegally-heavy HGVs who turn down the narrow lanes hereabouts, using GPS-equipped laptops, will now be able to drive right down the centreline - and take out BOTH fences at once....!

Are you a TORY or something?
Chas & I don't care if Kentrina doesn't approve since I've just found the boat ignition keys in my pocket!!!

Galileo might, indeed, be used for road pricing. But we already have road pricing in umpteen other forms, none of which rely on GPS. And even if it were to be used for road pricing, the actual prices would be set by the UK gov't -- so you can be pretty certain that (a) they would be the highest in Europe and (b) blamed on the EC.

Are the wants and needs of millions of other users entirely irrelevant?

Why should they lie about the cost of EGNOS but not about the cost of building motorways? If both sides of the equation are subject to the same factor of uncertainty/error/dishonesty, the comparison remains valid.

Reading loads of web-sites over years - while European interests fought over who should fund, control and ultimately decide Galileo .... it would appear the consensus was that Galileo was a good idea brough about by some Euro-crat who thought that reliance on US Military to maintain GPS coverage was a little silly. It would be good to have a European based system controlled by European interests.

Very good.

But.

Later reading revealed that powers that be with Galileo came to agreement with US Govt. that should US require GPS commercial to be switched off ... guess what ?

Galileo would go off as well as the US system !

Oh Dear ... so where is the benefit now ? Apart from such lucrative construction contracts for a system that will only add to an existing US based ... with no g'tee of staying operational if US is switched off.

Of course the Road Toll idea has been banded about by UK govt's for a while .. now that EGNOS, European WAAS system in reality, is supposedly online - that may speed up 'trials' ?

Who says I'm a skeptic ??

The European GPS project wasnt given any choice by the US. If they didnt agree tow the line about simultaneous switchoff, then the US would have deployed counter measures to ensure Gallileo never worked. ESA had to follow head bowed. ( It pissed the french off no end)

The primary advantage of Gallileo is to provide improved redundancy. Anyways what with the russian, chinesse and other systems were going to know exactly where we stand

Works with my Furuno GP-32 = and that model's been around for quite a few years.
I have a Garmin GPS12, no idea how I could alter this to pick up the new satellites rather than use the American 'birds', do not think it could be.

What about my Simrad CX33 around four years old - can this be altered?

If its anything like the CX44, the you'll have to force it to ignore the 'in test' flag (which was still set last weekend). To do that, go into the SDGPS setup screen. Press 'Adj' and toggle 'Ignore type 0 warnings' to 'Yes'. Then make sure the 'SDGPS mode' is set to 'Auto'.
