I am coming under pressure from SWMBO to fit a proper washing machine on our boat. Eumenia seems to be the machine fitted by most manufacturers and fits the space available. But its £900!! any ideas where we may source one for less either new or used? and is there any other machine suitable? (mechanical timer, stabilized drum low water usage, compact) UK or Greece?

I ended up fitting a Zanussi ZWC300, which, from memory, is the same size. Much easier to get spares for, especially in Med. I resisted for years, and it is fondly known as "the spare anchor", but to be fair, has been used quite extensively on our trip from Gosport through Gib to Cartagena in Spain.

Have you thought about a Candy 3.5kg load? AQUA100F-80 Aquamatic.

We fitted the Candy, model before this one, in 2004 and apart from replacing a capacitor it has been used 3-4 times a week without putting a 'spin' wrong! It washes well has low water usage (much less than washing by hand!!)

Zanussi

I think you are right, it is the ZWC1300. The programmer is electronic, not mechanical. In theory, this might be a problem if running an inverter, but we only use it with either shore power or the generator. I don't think the batteries would take the drain from an inverter trying to run the washing machine. It does use a lot of water but with a generator running, I switch on the watermaker to compensate. Little extra cost as the generator prefers to work "hard", so two birds with one stone. My setup was designed with a transatlantic crossing in mind, but if you intend to go elsewhere, you might wish to consider different solutions.

We have the Eumenia washer/dryer, robust piece of kit. When we are motoring we can run on the inverter and make water at the same time. Circa 3 amps ac on cold wash and 8 amps ac on hot wash. One loose connection and a blocked water valve is the only problem we've had since 2007 and it was OE in 1997. SWMBO very happy!

We have the Eumenia, and it gets tons of use, more than I would have expected. It has been dead reliable. But it takes only a tiny load (even tinier when drying), and uses vast amounts of time (nearly 3 hours for an entire wash-dry cycle). Also uses quite a lot of water. I would bet that there are better options out there. I think the technology has advanced quite a lot since these were designed.

I am about to remove a Eumenia washing machine from my boat. It has been used during a recent circumnavigation but we now that we back home and are living on board on a swinging mooring (summer only) and can't afford the water or the electricity to run it! Are you interested in it?
