My mate has a trawler style motor yacht that always makes me nervous when anchoring by it's danforth 'style' hook.

It never seems to bite, but happily skips along the bottom of the semingly hard pack sandy bottom around Spain and Mallorca.

A few weeks ago we had to put into Pto. Andratx, Mallorca and achored up. I dived and remained a little uneasy at the partially buried hook.

Sure enough, we Mirabelled in the night and so did a couple of other yachts.

Question is, what hook bites best in the bottom conditions described as my mate needs a better anchor.

Also, where did the term 'Mirabelled' come from?

Madame Blanc

Why won't your "mate" post himself?

I'm sorry if that sounds stark but since he left Alcudia. I have had to start buying my own beer and I am not happy about it (Yorkshireman).

He never writes.....its as if we never existed. Has he been to his boat since the delivery trip? Has he now got a berth that the boat will fit into? Has the ointment he got to clear up the problem that arose after a night in San Antonio worked?

So many questions............................

Now the serious answer.

I had a CQR until I decided it would be better left lodged under a rock in Bay of Alcudia and now have a Bruce. Both have been excellent setting first time every time with no mirabelling.

Whilst Bruce was on order I borrowed a Danforth and it was hopeless in the same waters.

Re: Madame Blanc

Clearly the skipper of White Lady V was mainly asleep during the Mirabelling, but had taken the fortuitous step of stationing a sleeping 'Ben' in the forecabin, thus assuring us of a rude awakening just after midnight when the wind shifted and got 'up a bit', Ben being sensitive to this sort of thing.

Anyhow, also being a Yorkshirman, I would have noticed if the skipper of White Lady V was overly liberal with the beers. You sure he hadn't taken money for a 'kitty' then made it look like he was buying?

Whatever he caught in San Antonio is proving almost as difficult as getting rid of AIDS, I hope he doesn't get that again.

Anyway, he has a berth, not sure if permanent yet or stop gap. They were due out there sometime in October, not sure when, but it can't be just now 'cos he just forwarded me that ancient e-joke about the guy who lost his wife on a connecting flight from Africa.... gets a letter from chief of Nairobi police advising she's safe and well, walking bandy legged and can't talk due to lock-jaw, photo attached (of wife in company of local man with a much larger endowment than I've ever been mis-sold).
