My boat is in Essex on the Crouch ,I live in Cumbria and will berth at Whitehaven ,which is the best way ,most people think north up the east coast and through the Caledonian canal. It is 31 foot and has bilge keels.
Any ideas or suggested stop overs or does anybody advocate going round by the south coast.
Cheers,
Clarky

what about going up to Edinburgh and out at Glasgow can't remember the name of the canal.

also going up humber and out at the Manchester Liverpool ship canal, a mate of mine did it with a 30ft cat a few years ago.

I'm not sure on the details of either route but sure some one will.

Probably the most efficient way to get the boat from A to B is on the back of a truck. So if you want to sail it is a matter which way do you want to go. South-a-bout generally has shorter hops between harbours, but I'd say it would be more about which places you'd want to visit along the way.

North and through Caley mast up then Crinan(30 day permit covers both) far cheaper than going southabout.Get weatherbound in a southcoast marina you'll have to sell the boat to pay the bill. Get weatherbound in the north you're likely to get" Well,it's no' your fault ye're still here!"

STOPS: Lowestoft
Wells
Scarborough/Whitby
Sunderland/Hartlepool
Eyemouth
Dunbar/N.Berwick
Anstruther/Arbroath
Stonehaven
Peterhead
Whitehills
Any council -owned harbour in Moray Firth(mostly drying) Cullen for ice cream!
Cal Canal

Done it,great pleasure.

[Well,it's no' your fault ye're still here!" ] do they still believe you Tom:D:D

.
Did this once delivering an MG336 from Ipswich to Whitehaven in March. It took us nine or ten days if I recall, via Brighton, Yarmouth, Falmouth, Newquay, Milford Haven, Howth and Douglas.

No-one ever suggested we went Eastabout. I would always head down channel personally. (And I have been up the East coast as well).

Be flexible about it

Have both passage plans drawn up. Then study the weather like mad as you approach lift off. Leave your decision until last minute.

With luck you'll have the next three days of SW f4 = perfect for north of the Humber or further before the weather broke down.

Or N f4-5 for next three days. Scuttle round North Foreland then fill yer boots. You might be beyond Weymouth.

Although, if you are unlucky, you'll be storm-bound in your home port, becoming seriously grumpy!

Thanks for the replies,I have a fair bit if time off so can probably go when the weather suits the best option.A number of people have warned me about cost of leaving the boat on the south coast.
Ludd, thanks for your detailed suggestions ,I will probably take your advice,I will probably do it in 3 stages northwards up the east coast, any other harbour or marina recommendations welcome.
I should have said berth at Workington.

Clarky

North Berwick is a very attractive little harbour but dries completely and is small.

There used to be a deep water visitors mooring outside, it may be worth phoning the YC. IIRC the mooring is fairly exposed to anything with the north in it.

I would go south, more to see, places to stop. If it was a rush job with massive passages planned I would go north. Dependant upon the summer and commitments I may consider taking a full season to do it, planning to leave the boat along the trip.
