Well,

I have just had an email correspondance with Essex over the purchase of a boat. I will not put it all on here to save their blushes, but since selling £1m Fairlines they seem to have lost the plot on Values..

Boat is a 1999 Fairline Targa 30 (twin Kad 32's). It needs some cosmetic work (covers, interior fabric) but technically sound..it was new in 1999 and bought by a fellow forumite for £90k ish

"...On the other hand our Targa 30 is worth anywhere between £85-90,000 in top condition [This is 2007 and the boat is 8 years old!!!!!]. It would take approximately £3-4,000 to have the entire boat re-upholstered, adding in a “grief factor” of £3,000 that would value the boat at around £78-80,000. A fair trade deal on this is £70,000.

This means the deal would read as follows: £70,000 (Targa 30) these boats are on various website for anywhere between £75,000 for a 2000 to £91,000 for a 2001....[This boat was for sale all 2006 for £65,000 and did not sell!]

Alternatively we could wait until the boat is free to move, bring her here, re-upholster, service, clean and put a warranty on her (total cost of £5-6,000) and sell her for £85,000. [Good luck mate, must be planning to take a twin Petrol off someones hands at that price]

I think you will agree Paul that this is in fact a good deal, clearly when you come to sell the boat you will be clearly ahead financially".....[How...basic maths????]

They have clearly lost the plot......they made their name out of fair deals, where they made a decent profit. Basically they want to make £23,000 on a trade deal....and that includes PX ing back my boat at £9,000 less than I bought it off them in June 2006!

I am afraid they will have a lot of used old boats on their books this Summer with an attitude like that!

PS, Just worked out That a Fairline only loses 5.5% over 8 years but an Aquador loses 42% over 4 years....best to buy a Fairline then /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Cheers

Glad I am not the only one!

I know historically other boat yards have had to Mortgage existing Stock to pay for New stock. In this case they artificcially inflated the prices of second hand boats to get a higher mortgage on them. They then could not sell them as it would have a negative effect on cash flow......

Not saying this is what is happening with Essex, but it would be playing with fire for any dealer to do this.

Cheers

I have to say that I am at EBY every weekend - well Essex Marina actually - and speak with the guys from EBY regularly - I am surprised at both of your posts - as I have bought 2 boats from them over the last 3 years - whilst the first was my first boat (it was a Bayliner) it was comparable in price to others that were around at the time and for a 2001 boat was only £39950, 6 months later I decided that Petrol was not the way to go and traded her in for my current boat (Hardy seawings 355) I got £43,000 for the Bayliner trade in and a knock down from £99950 for the Hardy to £88,000 - cant say fairer than that - I guess the problem is you are trying to sell them a Fiarline - as they deal in new boats from the Fairline range they may feel that the profit in second hand fairlines is not that good (compared to selling new ones) - guess you would get a better trade in on a new fairline where they can nudge the figures a bit more ..... I would recommend going to another broker that is not the Failine main dealer for Essex and surrounding areas ... prob get a much better figure there ...

All this from the people that charged me £122.00 for a new stemhead roller for my T34.....you do surprise me. And it was rubbish compared to the original, although it hasn't broken yet /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

No they are not doing this - but having just purchased the Marina and moved there they are renovating the Marina and they could be funding this from the boat business to turn the Marina into the "best on the east coast" so they say, they have made some really terrific changes already (Im bias as I moor there) we now have a car park - security - new pontoons - dredged moorings - paved walkways and lots more all in the space of a few months - so they are not doing bad - I guess they are making enough profit from the boat sales to do this without hiking our mooring charges this year - but next year I guess they will go up as the Marina is already 100% better than it used to be.

Ok, I agree that this should not affect the boat sales and they should not be doing this if they are, but as I say I have not had any problems or bad deals with them and they do seem very genuine guys in all of the deals I have done with them over the last 3 years .....

Weren't there reports that a manufacturer operating out of Emsworth had a mortgage on a recently part-exed Fairline Squadron?

Seawings,

I have bought two boats off them, sold three through them and always been happy. They used to make a profit, but it always seemed reasonable.

Got to say that Since SIBS they have not been the same. All the profit from the new Fairlines has gone to their heads! I would now only deal with them out of neccistity.

Seawings,

Nope they are buying in the Fairline at substantially less than £70k off someone else, I was trying to PX my Aquador back to them against it on a 'trade basis'. My Aquador was bought from them in 2006 for £47k, offered first PX at £35k then upped offer to £38k. As it was a trade deal they would literally not even touch the other boat as it would have been picked up in Fowey by me, no warranty etc. I would also be responsible for getting mine back to them.

Hope it clears things up,

Cheers

Yep sure has, it will be some time till I get another boat so I wont experience this first hand for a time yet - but will obviously keep my wits about me when enquiring - I will want back what I paid for my Hardy to initiate any deal on another boat ......

any idea what they at what they would buy the Aquador outright ?
If I ve got this... you ve found a 29/30 but you dont want to buy it direct as you end up with two boats. You think it will end up at EBY, so you ve tried to get them to sell the 29/30 to you, and take back the Aquador? But they seem to prefer to see it as two deals, really, and not cut you in on the switch. Is that it?

HI,

They have already done a deal for the Targa 30, I could not buy it direct as I still have the Aquador. So they were buying it for cash then doing a PX deal as usual. I simply offered a trade deal to make it easier. I reckon they would offer about £32k for the Aqudor to buy it off me.

ok
so if we allow for 5pct depreciation on yours, they are wanting 25-30 pct buying against selling...
Yea, when one puts a bottom value on a present boat, it sudenly seems too good to sell!

Maybe they just think that the Fairline is going to be a much easier boat to sell than the Aquador? Therefore it's only worth their while swapping one for the other if there is very good money in it and the Aquador stands them in at a nice low figure to make it easy to out?

I shouldn't think a Targa 30 is a hard boat to sell.

I would be very surprised,

The Targa 30 had been for sale since 2005 (Nov) at £65k. The Aquador 23Ht is the only one for sale in the UK so if you want one you have to go to them.

Swings and Roundabouts,

Cheers
