I've seen it done with a wire Coat Hanger, but the Spud masher is an improvement.

I can't see nice, creamy mashed spuds using that contraption. Maybe it's better suited to yottie purposes

I have one like that, useless for mashed spuds, replaced it as soon as I could, as I am not a yottie I'm open to offers for my zig-zag masher

I made this thing, though no oooh-aaaah video; I tried it and it seems quite effective.
When there are no halyards flapping in the wind one could possibly use it to catch octopus (?).
