I have already purchased Epifanes 'Brush Cleaner/Thinner', but I believe that either Turpentine or W/Spirit can also be used on their varnish ?

Am I right?

yes it appears to be identical to white spirit

Turps subs will be OK for brush cleaning but not for thinning

Real turpentine oil smells lovely but is something different altogether.

I got some turps sub by mistake last year. What purpose does it actually serve? It wouldn't touch anything I was using.

I use white spirit /cellulose thinner/petrol. One of those usually works. (Tractol agricultural paint actually recommends petrol as a thinners. You can even use it for spraying)

White spirit should conform to BS 245, although there are different grades.

AFAIK there is no standard covering the composition or properties of turpentine substitute . To quote Wiki "Turpentine substitute is generally not made to a standard and can have a wider range of components than products marketed as white spirit, which is made to a standard (in the UK, British Standard BS 245, in Germany, DIN 51632). Turpentine substitute can be used for general cleaning but is not recommended for paint thinning as it may adversely affect drying times due to the less volatile components; while it may be used for brush cleaning its heavier components may leave an oily residue".

There does not seem to be any price advantage in buying turps subs!
