We are soon to start our round Britain adventure and looking at possibly doing some stops in Ireland, looking at guidelines for entering from uk with uk boat and crew it looks like only id required, is this the case and also do we have to do anything when back to uk? Assume courtesy flag needs flying? but no Q flag also may nip over to Channel Islands
 
Ireland is in the common travel area so there aren't any barriers to visiting. You will need some form of ID. We went from Scotland to Dublin last year. We had a visit from Irish border force at Dun Laoghaire marina. It was more of a courtesy visit and they just checked our photo ID's (passports for us) and checked our boat registration.
 
In theory I think you should lodge a preadvice of your passage England to Ireland and vice versa. It's reasonably simple and I've used it travelling anchorage to anchorage(no border force anywhere near). But I've also not done it and not had any queries. Don't over worry about it, carry passports and/or ID.

GB -> Noriron -> Eire and the rest of the EU does not require us to disturb the HMRC from their slumbers. Haven't worked out how much fromage, vin et saucisson one can bring on the return journey.

We were boarded by UKBF last year on return. All was in order and they specifically remarked we had 'brownie points' because we were flying Flag Q.
 
Actually the rules are a bit strange. I think if you go from the mainland to the Republic you need to fill out the C1331 or the on-line version but you do not need ID. You only need ID if you are going to return by public transport. If however you go from Northern Ireland to the Republic you don't need to fill out a C1331 or the on-line version. There is a bug in the on-line version because it will not allow you to compleate the form without a passport number but you do not need a passport to go to Common Travel Areas.

Plan this year is to sail from Whitehaven across to Ballyholme (in Belfast Lough), then make my way up the coast, and eventually into Derry, but likley to anchor off and go ashore at either Greencastle or Moville, both in Lough Foyle but in the ROI.
So, in this instance, would I need to submit the C1331, as the first part of the trip is England to NI, then NI to ROI?
