I think the plain ones are always the ones to be proud of. As I understood it the defaced ones are for people who aren't entitled but wanted a fancy colour anyway so pay for the privilege

Personally I treat a defaced or blue ensign as a warning sign of overconfidence in boat handling ability!

Plain blue ensign usually means ex navy and have served their country (hence the warrant). These deserve respect and are usually great people and great boaters.

Actually I should elaborate, it's not the flag but the hand wringing over whether a bit of paper that surely no-one will ever look at, says king or queen on it.
