i don’t know if you have seen the prices of UK sewn ensigns, the only proper ones , but I can tell you it is several times that of those of three-stripe Europeans. An ensign lasts a lot longer if taken down at night.

If only we'd all stop buying the Chinese synthetic cloth printed ones, and insisted on UK sewn cotton ensigns, we could revitalise our rag trade!

(Especially if we leave them up 24 hours a day.)

Rumour has it that is why the Dutch have horizontal stripes, so they can cut off the ragged end, make a new neat seam and make their ensigns last much longer. You could do that a few times before the dimensions of a red ensign become too distorted. I presume such practice would be far below owners of blue or white ensigns.

Not at all. My (undefaced) blue has been tidied up a couple of times, although I have to say that hand-stitching a seam in a much-worn cloth is a bit beyond my masculine skills . Maybe Mrs Resolution will have time next week to improve things?
