My ensign bracket on the pushpit is cracked and I'm fed up with it flapping around my ears. Might be why it's cracked 🤔. How do you attach one to the backstay without the faff of tying knots. Is there clippy things ?

A small pulley at the top (attached to the backstay with a jubilee clip) and a small shroud cleat at the bottom.

Just fly it when in harbour or at anchour no legal requirement as in Spain to have a flag
I think they are useful for the skipper though (regardless of what the flag is) as an indicator of apparent wind. This means that if someone else is helming and you are in the comfort of the sprayhood you can see the wind (even if you can't feel it, the gauges are out of sight on the helm binnacle, and your view of the Windex is blocked. I use it a lot to tell how well the kids are sailing the boat!
