Quick question, I have had a new boat for some months and only just got round to fitting a pole and ensign. I attached to the rear port swim platform to keep out of the way plus I like the flag off the stern. I do however seem to have a reduction in speed that is disproportionate to the size of ensign! May just be conditions as it was only a day ago so testing has been limited but I top out a 34 knots but have only managed 31 since fitting, is this likely to be making that much of a difference? Size is 3/4 yard.

I would be amazed if the ensign would have that much impact on speed. It is more likely due to hull or sterngear fouling during the season.

Try swapping your red for a blue, it should give you an extra 5 knots :encouragement:

But not white, as based on my observations (3) on the 5 knot limit Beaulieu River, a white prevents you going less than 10 knots regardless of how much discomfort you cause to others.

I'm tempted to pretend I never asked but need to admit my mistake, went out tonight, better conditions and back at usual speed. Lesson learned, don't ask ever question on the forum too quickly. Did laugh at some of the replies mind you.

Ps will be buying a sewn one at the weekend!
