Is there any obvious reason why one hob on our gas cooker will not stay on? You are supposed to turn on the gas and hold the button for a few moments after it has lit before releasing it but for some reason the flame just goes out even if it is held for 30 secs. Short of just sitting there with the button pressed is there a solution?

Very common problem, the thermo-coupling isn't working, you'll need to go buy a new one (or get it replaced under warranty) I've done a few of these over the years.....

They are reasonably easy to fit, depending if it's on the hob or the oven. On the hob you remove the top tray, that's the one the burners sit on, but you need to remove the burner assembly first!, you can then access the thermo-couples and replace them easy. Don't forget to paint the joints with a soapy solution so you know they are good after you finish replacing the thermo-couple!

If it's the oven then you'll need to move the cooker out of it's mounting, remove the top tray (the one the burners sit on, but you need to remove the burner assembly first!), the LH side plate and the base. then you can remove the old thermo-couple and replace it. About an hours work and quite easy really.

I suppose, if you can afford it, you could get a CORGI chap to do the work for you, but it is easy and it won't work if it isn't done right

Before you go to the trouble of changing the thermocouple just check the knob spindle is going in far enough when you press it. Try pulling the knob off and pushing the spindle in by hand. If it still doesn't work, check the thermocouple is actually in a flame. If still no joy, check the thermocouple nut is tight on the back of the valve. If still no joy,,,,, change the thermocouple.

Good call, I forgot to mention that bit.

Do all of the above first, then buy a thermo-couple, if you are planning to head off somewhere I'd get one spare of each for hob and the oven & grill if you have one.

Well worth having as spares and it could save your holiday, marriage, relationship, lots of money in the bar if it all goes pear shaped on your cruise........
