Englandshire at a standstill???

Up in MacScotland, we have had snow since at least 18th December.
We get 5 minutes air time on the local news.

Englandshire gets some snow (20 cms is NOT extreme) and the BBC knock all the usual progs off BBC1 and have a NEWS SPECIAL !!!!

Whats all that about? It is inconvenient, agreed. It is definitely NOT a state of National emergency.

Are we so used to everything being easy and straight forward these days?

EDIT: Sorry - this was meant to stir the up in the LOUNGE...... I'm in the wrong bar!

Yes. but we LIVE here!

True, we only have 3 snowploughs for the entire South East, and one of those broke down at the first snowdrift - hasnt been used since 1963, and our road salt comes in 3kg bags which the dustmen sprinkle as the do their rounds - when they remember.

So getting caught with our trousers down by more than 3 flakes of snow IS a National Emergency. Particularly as Gordies chocolate biccy supply at No10 is running short due to the slippery pavements round Westminster. No10's H&S guy wont let anyone go round to the local Tescos for more, in case they sue for Industrial Injury.

When I were a lad my Dad worked for a road haulage firm, and whenever I went to their yard there were two demountable snowploughs lying in the corner. A few of the firm's fleet of six wheel tippers had the plough brackets fitted and on the rare occaisions that they were needed the council could call them out as additional snow ploughs. Several other firms had the same arrangement so that once every few years there were a good dozen snowploughs available at fairly short notice. I wonder why it doesn't happen now.

"Has Mrs Puddock forgotten the last leg pull yet?:D I bet you didnt let her read it. I wouldn't have dared." - You'll have to refresh my memory there?

If you have forgotten this then you cant possibly have shown it to Mrs Puddock at the time. They always say that the best way to remember a wedding anniversary is to forget it - once.:D

I have also stated on other threads that I have NO anti-English sentiment at all.

I'm sure you havent but we do see such sentiment altogether too often. People in England do get tired of the incessant (or so it seems) sniping from Scots and Irish, but funnily enough not the Welsh who seem to be altogether more relaxed.

But hey ho - and a happy new year!

I know that in surrounding areas around here, the Council have local farmers (4x4 tractors) on standby for ploughing duties in the rural areas.

Aw, diddums, you poor depressed people, try not to feel so persecuted, after all we gave you all our oil, why don't the miserable Celts love you more, surely they can't have forgotten all that Olly Cromwell, the Black and Tans, Butcher Cumberland and the Duke of Sutherland did for them. You could go down to the lounge and read all the really funny Jock and Paddy jokes, that will cheer you up a bit. We love the way you always take care of everything for us, really we do
Remember all you have had to put up with is Gordon Brown and he will also probably be history in an hour or two.

News is about the unexpected in part.. there's stakes in the ground at the side of the roads near Avimore so the abundant snow ploughs in the area can trace the road to clear it, the A9 has gates to close it off when the snow gets too bad etc etc.. we expect it to snow in Scotland so it's not news worthy.. not the same in the sarf :)

p.s. had a check of the weather conditions for the next 14 days for my neck of the woods and my old stomping grounds, the Moray Firth... minus figures all the way in MK.. near on double figure temps in Elgin next week.. maybe you'll be in the news next week as a resul ;)

in the meantime, crack open a can of heavy and chill out... litererally ;)

The other big difference is the amount of traffic. If the snow falls around rush hour the few ploughs and gritters that we've got get stuck in the jams with everyone else. Maybe they should put blue lights on them; people seem to make a bit of effort to let ambulances through.

London stops and the economy goes tit* up.
It did anyway!
I suspect the problem is that there are too many people down there, the roads can't really cope at the best of times. Maybe we need a density tax to fund more roads?

In 1966 Portsmouth Island was cut off from the rest of the world by a lunchtime snowfall, buses & lorries jacknifed, and the island was cut off except for the train and the Gosport Ferry.
When they interviewed the Borough Surveyor, as to why the roads were not grittted he said " As it has not snowed by 7.30 am , we stood down the gritting crews, because 'everybody knows it never snows after 7.30 in the morning'"

Nothing has changed!

The origin of the word news (I think) is from the points of the compass, not what's new in the world, so the news should be more equally spread geographically? And why do they only ever give us bad news? There must be some good news, somewhere? TV including the news is a control tool, like religion, and I know we should be in the lounge...;)

Well, I'm having words with my estate agent! When we bought this hideously overpriced southern house HE SAID it did't need double glazing as cold winters were a thing of the past!
Can I get a refund?

If you have forgotten

I like to have a go at the Lancastrian gits, afterall the war of the roses isn't done yet, but as a Tyke ,I will stand solid with the Lancasrian gits and the Jocks against the true enemy from the South, and the French too.

Where has the toung in cheek icon gone? Well half toung in cheek.

I'm in Edinburgh at the moment, it's very quiet here, loads of people absent from the office. Most of the non-scots seem to be here though!
Are the Polish workers in Scotland supposed to be more used to snow than the Polish workers in England?

No, the problem was that the Scottish banks forgot their traditional cautious ways and went sub-prime mad.

Hasn't made much difference to me.

I live in England. Not missed a day at work, and I cycle everywhere through the snow drifts, whatever. Put another layer on and have a little adventure! ;)

The sea is freezing near where I live, in the inner harbour we have a sheet of ice.
