is there a web site tha gives any information that can explain the confusing and unimaginative numbering codes of various engine manufactures (VP seems the biggest offender) Do the numbers & letters relate to the bhp - 4/6/v8 - petrol/diesel etc ?

or perhaps the experts can clue me in

Like you, I find the numbering codes confusing.

However, for what it's worth, Volvo's KAMD43P stands for:
K ompressor
A fter-cooled
M arine
D iesel
43 (don't know what these figures represent)
P leasure

Perkins 4.108 is much simpler:
4 cylinders
108 cu ins

Re: engine codes

<<43 (don't know what these figures represent)>>

40 - 44 = 4 generations of the 4 series block size

Volvo made/make 30s 40s 60s and 70s ie 70, 71, 72, 73, 74 and are on 75

their new engines are coded differently ie D4, D5 and D6

D = Diesel and the number of cylinders (at present anyway)

According to Volvo the M stands for Reverse.
If it has an M it is for Shaft Drive, and if it does not have an M it is for Sterndrives.
Well at least that is what my KAD300/KAMD300 manual says
