We have been out for a 'pootle' today, one thing i noticed, on our return journey the engine temperature climbed to just shy of the red ( it only shows green/red on a dial)
It was fine on the out leg of the journey. I throttled back for a bit (only doing 5 kts anyway) and it calmed down.
Should i be concerned or is this normal behaviour.
For info it is a Volvo Penta AQ130 petrol on a 270 leg in a 25ft princess hull.

without knowing any actual temperatures - its hard to say if this is significant. However probaby best to check it out with an IR thermometer if you can. 5kns is not much on any engine, usually the problem is engines not getting hot enough. When you know if the engine is getting too hot then check out the cooling system starting with the raw water pump impellor and cooling water inlets.

Not sure where to look for this, it's a 1971 V.P AQ130C, does it suck water in from the stern drive or is there another inlet?

Usually with a stern drive the water is sucked up through the sides of the leg. The raw water pump is mounted on the front of the engine above the crankshaft pulley. It has a rubber hose (right side) from the water filter and then to the stern drive and another rubber hose (left side) going to a metal pipe on the other side of the engine into the heat exchanger. It has either 4 or six brass bolts holding the cover on. It has been known for the raw cooling water to be sucked up through a skin fitting in the bottom of the boat - try tracing the rubber hoses back and see where they go.

This gauge is really poor, all the petrol 171/170s etc run about there when under load.
Buy an infa red heat sensing gun and have a play around the engine. Test particularly the exhaust manifold, heat exchanger and thermostat area, front of the cylinder head. If you don't see much above 90/95 deg c then don't worry.

Does it push any water out the cap, assuming its an indirect cooled model?

Yes it does draw up through the leg.

almost certainly talk to asap-supplies they do lots of gauges etc. you may need to change the sensor on the engine too but thats easy.
