Engine starting from a "Leisure" battery

Re: Engine starting from a \"Leisure\" battery

Agree again with BoatMike. Our 3 are all are large van batteries, engine I like to feel is in good condition even after 21 years and batteries have been lasting 7 years since I bought her . I do not let the batteries get to more than half discharge before switching to reserve. Starting is always done on No1 battery which then powers fridge, lights, instruments etc for rest of trip switching to No2 as required. The engine battery thus never gets used and is always full for emergencies. Seems to work for me and up till now batteries from motor factors have never cost more than £70 each. When No1 starts to struggle to crank engine after about 5 years a new engine batter is fitted, engine moved to No2 and no2 moved to No1, thus all batteries get turns at different usage patterns. Works for me and is cost effective.
