Engine Start Protection

I would suggest that internal resistance of the larger battery would increase the charging time to put back the used amount. Lets be honest - battery chargers have stated A/Hr ranges probably because of that.
But of course a smaller battery will reach its higher voltage sooner and cut back the charge rate accordingly.

So interesting question.

Probably not a lot in it. The slower you charge the deeper the charge, so the smaller battery will reach high voltage faster, but not be fully recharged. This will need a period to absorb a full charge, the larger battery will take longer to reach high voltage, so absorb more charge.

On a side issue, having read now what is planned to isolate, I would not do it. We bought out power lock-out back in 1982, but only for non critical systems, not for vhf,gps and sailing instruments. The idea was to preserve power for vhf, sailing instrumenmts and engine start, not run the fridge, or to-day invertors..

I would fit a buzzer only, if it sounds the skipper can start engine, or manage power to suit, not be left in a dangerous situation

Yes, but that could happen with a 2nd battery anyway. At least the PS thing will stop the battery going so low it's knackered. I am short on space as well, this seems an easy to instal option.
Thanks sona for the link.

If running out of battery power is a real problem then it would suggest that you really do need another battery. Perhaps with a little imagination you can create the space, I had 2 batteries in my Seawych, used to last a week with a Forgen wind generator.

At the end of the day an *% amp/hr liesure battery and a switch would cost you about the same but give you so much more freedom and security, well worth creating the space.

Oh Lord! So much to worry about..... the joys of boating... I am sure a 2nd battery is the way to go, I think one of those Merlin VSR jobbies is the way to go. I guess they are simple enough to plumb in.

[/ QUOTE ]If you're going to buy a VSR, check the price of this BEP 90A version at Marine MegaStore - about £30 cheaper than the 100A one offered by Merlin.

I have no commercial interest ... but having had discussions with the guy and found him to be first rate and his gear offered at good price - why not PM / email Halcyon and see what he has to offer in this line ? It is his speciality and he does help us on here.
