Hi all,

I am looking at a 30 metre steel boat for sale. It needs major work in the engine room.

It would need engines, generators, hydraulics, tanks and aircon to come out, all to be replaced with new.

Anyone have any idea of a ballpark figure what this would cost? The boat would be going to either Feadship or Pendennis.

Thank you

Thank you for the reply
Yes, I know it is a moving number.
Factor in 2 new engines & 2 new generators circa €125k, respray engine room €20k, airconditioning, fire extinguishing, tanks, etc. Is it doable for €300k?

Don't forget to factor time and yard space/rent.
And what ever your figure is have a extra cash to hand for the unexpected.

How old is this vessel - and what sort of condition is the hull in generally?
What is the asking price for the vessel?

As Seastoke notes above, have you had a hull survey carried out?
If not, then that would be the first step - paying particular attention to the hull bottom, including ultrasonic thickness measurements over the whole bottom (and ideally all the rest of the steelwork as well).

If she has teak decks over steel, be even more careful.

How big are the engines that need to be replaced?

300k euros is probably a very optimistic estimate for replacement of everything in the engine room.

With no knowledge of what the boat is or what the engines/generators are to be replaced it's a tough call to say a price. Ask Feadship and Pendennis for a quote, post it here for discussion then double it.

Hi all

Thank you very much for your responses.
I am in the process of arranging a survey on the boat hopefully to be completed in the next few weeks. Obviously, this will determine alot, but from what I have heard the boat had some structural work done in 2011, so fingers crossed the steel is ok.
The engines are currently 2x 450HP Cummins and I would likely change them like for like.
I am speaking to Feadship and Pendennis on Wednesday so hopefully they will give me some insights as to what is involved.

Regards

what's wrong with the engines that requires complete replacement? Can n't they be rebuilt?
I can see why you don't want to say much about the boat, however I very much doubt anyone in here is going to "grab" the opportunity and relieve you of your future pain, so at least mentioning if it's a 40s 50s or 60s would help a bit.
However, I would very much question your to-do list (as did MrB above), fe, is the rest of the boat sound (in your opinion at least) or you already have estimates for the rest of the jobs and it's only the e/r that you cannot estimate?

good luck

I'm no refit expert but I suspect that 2 new engines + 2 new generators is going to cost a lot more than €125k, more like double that depending on the size and type of the engines and generators

Hi
The boat is from 1960s, 30 metres and steel. The boat had a refit, mostly cosmetic between 2009-2011. The current engines have over 7,000 hours on them. I feel that if the boat had enough spent on it, it would be a classic with state of the art systems & electronics. Tanks etc need to be replaced because there were leaks last year. But, the most important thing is the survey, that will tell alot!
I understand the point about the yards not wanting to see it unless it is in excess of €1 million, but my thinking is that by the time you replace the engine room essentially, new galley, navigation systems, aircon, dry dock time & labour, I won't be too far off the million?

Please post some pictures (after your deal is complete) this is a voyage we would like to part of.

I have just priced a pair of 355hp Cummins engines complete with gearboxes and dual helm stations. If was £85k inc vat supply only. Roughly a pair of 40kW gensets would be be £65k. Plus all accessories.
