Engine re-spray

Great decision, we had our Sadler 32 next to you a few yrs ago before you went down river to Pin mill.. Our Bukh never let us down, slightly apprehensive with new boat asit has a Volvo 2003.
Hoping other posters may offer some don't worries re Penta 2003?
Where are you laying up?

One more factor in favour; taking it apart and putting it back together is fun! No, really. Giant, real Meccano. I always wanted to be an engineer, now I can play at it:)

plus an excellent way to get to know your engine.

Currently overhauling my own. It's paint is in worse condition than yours. Completely de-gunked it and it's not as bad as it looked. The rust on the block you'll find is surface only. The real rust is concentrated on the exhaust manifold, handstart cover, & mounting legs/gearbox bell housing. Considered re-painting yourself? - looking like the complete facelift will come in under 70.00 in materials.

interested to know what sort of quote have you been getting for the cylinder overhaul?

Was that Charisma? If so I think we spoke a few times. Unfortunately the boat was grounding there at LW springs when ships went by.
As luck would have it the spot at Pin Mill is far nicer; less exposed, nearer to the pub etc, etc

Blasting about £40, Halfords engine lacquer and a home re-spray. New gasket set (the lot!) about £350 from memory, new wet liners £180 each + VAT, also O rings and various. Measured wear on the cylinders by inserting a new piston ring at the unworn part of the cylinder, then at the worn part. Measure the gap in the piston ring at each, the difference must be under 0.3mm. I measured it today, it was 0.63mm!
Bang goes another £500 ish. Heigh-ho, back to work Monday.
All over it can't be under £1k but a new one is nearly £7k + extras.
Wife may write this up for YM, been talking to Snooks. It could make a good, direct comparison with his decision to fully re-engine with a Beta or some such device.
PS I hasten to add I have the help of someone who knows their arse from their elbow. A good friend who has been, in a past life, a marine engineer. Now he's just an engineer. A VERY useful man to know!

that just has to be "tip of the day"!

Indeed this was Charisma, she is now in Chichester with a happy new owner. The depth issue started affecting us to so RHYC installed some fore and aft moorings which were very difficult to use given windage etc and users pulling far too much line. Next season we will have to look at other options with a 2m draft.
Sounds like Al and Norman at Bukh are being fab and really helpful as I always found them - a great resource for all Bukh owners.
I had the water pump refurb two seasons ago and for not a huge sum either and i asked the question how long will this last, the response came back oh it will be good for another 20-30 years! Wow what engineering. I think you have done the right thing particularly given you hadn't boiled the engine etc.
Whilst no one ever sees the engine you will have great peace of mind as well as long term return of service - good call.

I found having our own private smoke screen rather embarrassing!
The water pump is a Johnson, re-furb kits are generic, I think. Did one on the previous boat with some success.
How far did you take Charisma?

Yes we are over wintering afloat given we took delivery of Orcana (Sigma 38) on 27th July from Inverkip Scotland and she has been undergoing something like a re fit etc at Foxs. We will be attempting to get to the Haven on Saturday 1st Dec after a quick oil change Fri night and battery charge up. I serviced engine las week apart from oil as I needed the engine warm.
Will look out for you.
Ben
