My Bukh 10 starts readily but if at some time in the future I suddenly have a duff starter switch and I really need the engine going - a) can I run a lead direct from the battery + to the starter solenoid? and b) if I do this, how do I then stop the engine as the ignition switch also controls the stop solenoid? Hope this makes sense to somebody out there.

if you get the correct terminal the engine will turn over, & fire while the wire is on , when you take it off the engine will stop, as the ignition switch is not on , I think you will find.

You don't even need a wire. Rest a screwdriver on the main terminal and touch its end on the solenoid connection. But in my experience the switch is reasonably reliable and it's the solenoid that might fail. It is possible to bypass the solenoid with some designs of starter but it takes a heavy length of cable and nerves of steel!

Disconnecting the electricity won't stop a diesel DV10, as I found on mine once when the main wiring loom connector vibrated itself off, hence disconnecting the stop solenoid and everything else. I had to use the decompressor to stop the engine. Normal stopping requires turning the keyswitch to a different position which energises the stop solenoid.

An alternative to emergency starting a DV10 is hand starting. It takes 2 people (a small person to decompress and a big one to heave). I tried it once and it worked. Not as bad as it sounds as they are small single cylinder engines.

I'd say well insulated steel ....

As an impoverished student my Frogeye used to suffer regularly from a sticking solenoid. Nine time out of ten a tap with a soft mallet (or failing that a 4lb lump hammer) would free it up. The other time needed a screwdriver elegantly shorted across the terminals did the trick - until one day my hand slipped and the metal strap of my watch fulfilled the same role. Once I had pulled the now welded strap off the terminals, and attended to the burn that went down to the bone, I fear that me credibility with the carefully selected girlfriend was running a bit low.
