Engine or fuel problem comments pls

So when to start engines port engine tried slow then clonck, so dipped oil bevlow dip but dip is only half inch tolerance so put 2 litres in back to top so tried to start again slow to turn but started and sounds like it is missing then a lot of black smoke and picks up revs an d is running fine so off we go for the wknd three hour cruise at good speed no prob only a bit smoky so 2 days later same slow to start lots of smoke then runs ok ,no not batteries as does both engines so I has a look at engine and found fuel pipe was seeping diesel now it seems to start right but with smoke , QUESTION COULDTHIS LOSE PIPE CAUSE MY PROBLEM AND COULD IT STILL CAUSE SMOKE AS THE PIPE MIGHT HAVE GOT AIR IN TO GIVE WRONG MIXTHNKS FOR REPLIES PS ENGINE PERKINS 225 350hrs

Roy, don't think leaking diesel would cause lots is smoke. Presume the smoke was coming from the exhaust?

Didn't notice any smoke when you went past on Sunday, at least I think it was you!

Yes it was me doing nice 18 kn only smoke on start yes exhaust

Surely any leak means that air is getting into fuel line hence difficult to start,you would be putting excess fuel into the engine which would burn off as smoke when you finally get going ???

I hope so was hoping someone might say that do u think it might soot up for a while but won't know till I go back to the boat

Have you sorted the leak? If so and you still have a problem I would think it is something else. When you put oil in the engine did you over fill it? If so maybe some of the oil is being burned?

A fuel leak is bad news, sort it!! also if both engines start on the same battery bank, one is fine and other reluctant then check the wiring to the starter motor, most diesels kick out smoke on start up but soon clear when under load,

Well I found the olive to the port engine diesel leaking fuel so tightened went out for a cruise engine loosing revs and smoking so back to berth leaking again sealed ,started engine left revving at full hit ,runs fine but smokes can it be from having air in before and will it clear or might I have another issue they have never smoked before ,the smoke is grey

On Saturday under power it looked like a duff injector on the port engine.
