Just about to get oil to do the annual change and notice that previously I have used both 10W40 and 15W40 turbo diesel oil; anyone got advice as to the pros and cons of each and which is likely to be best? Thanks for any help.

i got mine from gordon humphreys at north west automarine in largs it worked out a lot cheaper as you need 18 litres for two engines good quality oil aswell.

FWIW
There was a worrying artcile in PBO couple of years back about making sure you use the correct full spec of oil, not just the lube rating.
It referred in summary that :
'lots of the 'newer' oils, same lube grades, are high deteregent type and not suitable for older designed engines (like yours) and can / will do serious long term damage and shorten life substantially'.
I had vp41b and they were 'spec' with a pretty basic mineral oil (cheap) but needed some digging to find the closest correct spec / right one. Some of the engines for example use very old fundamental designs albeit in pretty new boats. The AD range has evolved over a number of years from a basic engine originally.
You may think your doing the best for your engine with bling oil but in fact ££££'s awaits.
xx

I really like sythetic oils as they cover such a range of temperatures, and last so well. I called CMD re my Merc Diesels, but their advice is to stick to mineral oils (of the right spec), so I will. Bought some Total 15w40 for less than £15 per 5 litres at the local farmers stores.
