its that time of year again. last year got old oil out with one of those vacuum pump thingies- it took ages, used a hand pump in the end. in the interests of idleness can anyone recommend a reasonably priced electric (12v) engine oil extraction pump.

What ever type of pump you use the secret is to throughly warm the oil through first. It takes quite a while before what is sitting at the bottom of the sump is properly warmed.

The advantages of a vacuum tank type pump is that you can just let it suck for as long as it takes. (PITA with hand pump when the oil is cold) AND it is almost impossible to spill any oil .. no pump delivery tube to pop out of the container.

No dont know of a decent electric pump. They all look pretty Mickey Mouse things to me.

If you want to go mad and install a proper set up, with gear pump not impellers, then you need a Reverso or similar

For something less involved I watched VolvoPaul on this forum change oil very quickly using a Jabsco impeller pump that just crocodile clipped onto the battery. He'll be along soon to tell you which model. It shifted the 90 litres in a pair of D12s in no time, though that was with the oil warmed up first as VicS says. I liked it so much I bought it off him after the service!

If the oil was properly hot was there a blockage in the extraction pipe? Most people swear by a vacuum Pela (there is a long recent thread on this) and I have never had a problem with getting the oil out in 5 minutes. And as Vic says, spillproof.

Maybe mine is blocked then too. How much oil did you do in 5 mins, as I reckon it took a good twenty minutes with warmed oil per 6 litres.
So 22 litres took a damn long time !

According to a US boating site, there is a problem with the 6 litre Pella (spherical type). The coating inside the black teleflex cable outer that goes down the dipstick tube comes away and blocks the tube.

I have this type and I have had the same problem. Cutting a couple of inches off usually solves it for a while.

Wamed oil, the pump usually takes about a minute a litre when its going properly.

I usually take the boat out for an hour or more first- this should be long enough to warm it all properly. I will check out my Pela vacuum pump again. I haven't heard about the possible blocking.

About 6-8 minutes for 5 litres. It could just be debris in the pipe, particulary if it has been used for bilge water etc. The pipe is very small dia.

I also use a Jabsco impeller pump, mine is a water puppy but you must use the correct impeller, not one for water, I forget the name now but it is blue, does not swell up and can allegedly run dry.

Also be VERY carefull with the discharge pipe if it gets out of the container it is like a demented snake and makes an awfull mess.

Strange, mine is 8 years old and has never suffered from this problem.

Since getting my pela pumps I very rarely use the water puppy anymore, as long as oil is warm you can remove it in minutes.

Thanks Capsco, yes it was called a water puppy. And as you say, it needs the impeller changing for one that doesn't turn to mush when immersed in oil. Which reminds me, I haven't done that job yet

I have changed the oil in my engine twice this year... Shell oil at cost is my excuse...(as well as the obvious OCD's...) and last oil change was last weekend. Its just so easy, warm engine up for 10 minutes and a few pumps and leave it to fill, OK, so I am only changing 10.5ltrs but you don't have to stand and watch the thing, I get on with other jobs. (like reading or drinking coffee), as capacity of my extraction tank 4ltrs took 3 loads but each fill took only around 5 minutes... :)

I think 15 mins is about right with my Pela for 6 litres. I had an electric thingy. Useless. Very pleased with my Pela though, as I can get on with a couple of other things while it is sucking.
