Got to change the oil on my new to me engine, Volvo. But got no access to sump oil drain plug. What is the best alternative method to do the oil change. This is using something through the dip stick, or from somewhere else?. But will this method get all the old oil out?

Thanks

Peter

Will get most but not all, even using the sump drain wont get all out as most yacht engines sit canted. A good service engineer will flush the oil, using an oil designed for this purpose. In practice, draw the oil through the dipstick, add fresh and dont worry. If you are fussy change the oil twice yearly.

You can pump most of the oil out through the dipstick hole. If there is sludge in the oil filter then use a flushing oil (I've just done this on mine - about half the normal oil capacity, run for about 10mins, drain. I was very impressed with how clean the oil is now!)

What engine?, What model? They vary.

Some eg the old MD1b , 2 11 17 etc can be pumped out from the dipstick/coarse strainer fitting. Other later engines have a tube fitted from which the oil can be pumped.
