Engine hours

Pete,

looking at Rickard's picture and the same one on his website, then this is purely the LCD display and it's attached ribbon cable. If so - then there is no electronics involved and no impact on the meter readings. If the total hours are stored in the Tacho then they it will display, if they aren't then it won't.

It's going to take one of us to make the leap of faith and order one / install it ..... I'm very tempted

Kevin

Kevin,

I'm pretty certain that Rickard's display does store the hours. I think he's saying its a functional equivalent but a better fit than the RS components one see http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/hours...2267573743D31383520363130372677633D4E4F4E4526.

Pete,

those are 2 completely different animals - the picture from Rickard shows a flexi cable ( like a ribbon cable ) attached to the LCD, there are no electronics involved and therefore no way to store anything.

I've been contemplating fixing my hour meter for the last 4 years, reading all the links and instructions ( including Nigel Mercer's ) and this is the first time that I have seen a pure replacement LCD - everybody else has been using the type of active display that you linked to

I suspect there's a circuit board on the back as per the RS instruments one (which also has a ribbon connector) - see https://verl900.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/volvo-penta-tachometer-lcd.pdf.

Even so, if it's a good fit without the hassle of cutting and filing the clock to fit then its definitely worth a try. I'd be willing to go first but don't currently have a boat (however virtually every one I've viewed has knackered 873992 hour counters - hence my interest).

I will respond as soon as I can
Very busy for the moment as the boat show in Gothenburg starts on friday so I am working with that for the moment

Yes the original hours will show after the display has been changed

I replaced the LCD on both mine' I did somewhere on the forum put up my ummm experiences that might help other three thumbed members from screwing up. However, now I know what I am doing, it is not that tricky or time consuming, though you need to connect to a bettery for days/weeks to count back up to the right hours.
I got those by having a hot air heater on the dials for long enough to get a flash of the hours before starting.
Of course if this is simpler, all good, but you still have to take the dial apart and put it together which is at least 50pct of the job!

If you Google the VP tachos you will see it is a very common issue that they loose the hour reading. The problem is that the Tacho is very sensitive to moisture and the ribbon easily oxidize. Some people have recovered the hour reading by cleaning the ribbon cable where it attachs to the board... however it will not last for long. A new one of same quality will just give you a few more years at best and you will have the same issue. This is the reason I decided to change the hour meter to another one as per my comment earlier.

Back again after the boat show and other work as struggeling with the chinese suppliers of my stainless products :(

I will check shipping and what best way to pay for you who´s interested in buying
I do have a Payson account that is connected to my business. Don´t know how common Payson is in UK?
Will also make a descreption of how to replace the LCD-display
I always tell my customers that if you can do the work with removing the tachometer you can easily do the work with replacing the LCD-display

Made this video yesterday. I don´t really replace the display here as I did that work last year on this one.
The display sits with double sided tape and is normally easy to remove

Shipping that can be tracked is 110SEK. Approximately £9.20
Non trackable 50SEK. Approximately £4.20

For payment I think the best would be if I start a Paypal account for my business. I only have one private today

As a follow up to Rickard's video -

I bought one from Rickard last week and received it on Friday, fitted it on Saturday and can now see my Engine hours ( 2592.1 ), which apart from a brief view one warm day 4 years ago, is the first indication of my total hours since buying Catre 5 years ago

Fitting was as easy as his video shows, took around an hour including resetting the tachometer needle as it wasn't quite right first time

Tools were a Flat and Pozidrive screwdriver and tweezers to lever the needle off.

Thanks to Rickard for finding a source of these LCD's - no connection just a very happy customer :-)

There is a link on page 2 to Rickards webshop and it's also in the youtube video.

Adjust the needle - I did it by replacing at the same point it came off, but that sounded low so I moved it based on the sound of the engine. I've bought a IR Tachometer off Ebay for £10 and will use that against the crankshaft this weekend to get a more accurate setting.

Rickard, I have added reference and links to your website LCD purchase page and your Utube video to our page

On our page there are also comments from a number of people who have corrected the problem by re-soldering some dry contacts on the PCB.

The Curtis LCD that we obtained from RS components continues to work perfectly!

Regards

Another satisfied customer, fitted the display supplied by Rickard this afternoon and revealed that the engine has done 927.4 hours. Any tips to prevent it happening again, is it damp or sunlight which causes the failure?

Nice to see that you all get your hours back :)
Someone told me that it´s due to moist but it sounds a little unlikely to me as it doesn´t seem to matter if the tacho is placed inside(dry) or outside
I have asked some customers if the hours appears when it´s hot or cold but the answers seems to vary

Thanks for buying
